Sony Announces BDP-S790 Blu-ray Player Coming Soon

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG3

Sony is looking to release new Blu-ray players in April. Among the collection is the BDP-S790, which is the company’s flagship model. The main feature about this device is that it is capable of upscaling Blu-ray movies from full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution to a 4K resolution. A 4K resolution is 4 times the pixels of 1080p resolution and provides the same kind of detail that is seen in the theaters. Other major features will include Wi-Fi capabilities, the Smart TV platform, and access to the Sony Entertainment Network. Sony has not announced a retail price for the BDP-S790 at this time.

The S70 also features built-in Wi-Fi with the usual Netflix, Pandora, and Hulu support, but you can also connect an optional camera and use Skype, and Sony's new Socialize app lets you share to Facebook and Twitter. No pricing yet, but Sony says it'll be out this April.

Another year, another slate of new Blu-ray players from Sony. The BDP-S790 is of particular interest with its ability to convert Blu-ray's 1080p to 4K. Both it and the BDP-S590 of course do 3D and include WiFi, which like those before it, facilitates the delivery of more video and audio streaming opportunities than we can list. In addition to favorites like Netflix and Hulu Plus, you can also access the Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited streaming services from the Sony Entertainment Network. If you've ever wished there was an easier way to share what you were watching with your followers and friends, the new Socialize viewing application lets you do just that directly from the player.
