HTC unlocks bootloaders for Droid Incredible, others

HTC has added six phones to its list of phones which support the vendor's bootloader unlock tool. With it, savvy users and developers can load a modified version of the Android OS firmware that gives them the interface or app control they wanted. The smartphones added to the compatibility list for the tool include the Aria, ChaCha and its Status counterpart, the Desire Z and its T-Mobile G2 equivalent, and the Droid Incredible.

HTC Offers More Bootloader Unlocking Tools

HTC recently made the tools that allow users to unlock their device's bootloader available to more smartphones via its developer web side. The new handsets include the Desire HD, Wildfire, Desire Z, T-Mobile G2, Aria, ChaCha, and Status. HTC has already made the same tools available for most of its Android smartphones released since September 2011. Once unlocked, owners will have more freedom to install custom software on their Android smartphones.

Surprise! Even a clever little gimmick like a dedicated Facebook button can’t save a bad phone from an early demise.
After just 36 days on the shelves, a trusted source close to AT&T tells us the carrier is already prepping to ditch HTC’s so-called “Facebook Phone”, the Status. The reason? The thing just isn’t selling.
Since the initial tipster came forward, we’ve confirmed with multiple sources that sales of the Status are considerably lower than anyone expected. AT&T declined to comment.

HTC's "don't call it the Facebook phone but it is a Facebook phone" Status is now available for purchase from AT&T. Fifty bucks and a new two-year agreement will net you an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone with a 2.6-inch touchscreen and a portrait QWERTY keyboard. Of course, you also get a special button for all of your Facebooking needs, and HTC has included some Facebook-specific apps with the version of Sense that is installed on the Status. Following the usual leak + wait-and-see saga, AT&T has today confirmed that it'll be the exclusive home to one half of HTC's Facebook-infused duo. The so-called Status will be making its way onto Ma Bell's airwaves on July 17th, with eager social networkers able to get their pre-orders in today. It'll sell for $49.99 on a two-year agreement, with that tally netting you a dedicated Facebook "Share" button that'll allow photos / videos /websites to be instantly uploaded to your account. Sometime in the last year or so, the carriers picked up a bad new habit. They’d announce that they were getting a phone, talk all about the specs… but then give no indication of when it might actually be available. We’ve just been sent a shot of AT&T’s upcoming Facebook-centric device, the AT&T HTC Status. The device looks pretty identical to the European HTC ChaCha, save for the obvious AT&T branding. We exclusively reported the HTC Status would be the official name of the device here in the U.S., and now that it’s confirmed, we have to say, it’s one of the most logical names for a device we can think of in recent memory.
