Samsung Could Switch to WOLED Technology

Samsung is one of the leading companies that have stated their expansion into the OLED HDTV industry. The company has already announced an upcoming 55” OLED HDTV with more models expected next year. Recently, reports were told that Samsung is looking for a cheaper way to produce OLED screens and will look towards WOLED technology instead. The main difference between OLED and WOLED technology is how the OLED panels are used. In OLED TVs, the OLED panel is both the lamp and the screen and doesn’t require additional lamps in order to show bright images. The downside though is that this process is costly to produce large screens. WOLED technology uses the OLED as white lamps in the back, while a...

Sony and Samsung Enforce Minimum Pricing Policy

Sony and Samsung Enforce Minimum Pricing Policy

Filed in: TVsSonySamsung

It looks like the days of retail stores competing for low prices are coming to an end. Today, both Sony and Samsung announced that they will be enforcing minimum pricing for all their HDTVs. This means that the TV will retail for the same exact price, no matter what retailer you purchase it from. This not only eliminates competition between the retailers, but also eliminates the resulting lower retail prices. Sony has already stated that companies who don’t adhere to the minimum pricing policy will have their financing cut off. Given the heavy losses that were reported both companies last year, many wonder if this move is a good idea or not. There is also the possibility that this policy cou...

Samsung's got a 55-inch Super OLED TV of its own, coming in the second half of 2012

We're seated here at Samsung's 2012 CES press event, and the company just revealed that it'll be matching rival LG's 55-inch OLED TV... when a 55-inch OLED TV of its own. Not surprisingly, the outfit's trumpeting its terrific color reproduction, the virtual absence of motion blur and face recognition. Sadly, there's not even a model number to mark down, and a price estimate should be even harder to find. It is, however, expected to ship in the latter half of 2012. There's no color filter needed here, either, as the self-emitting RGB sub-pixels take care of themselves; since light output on the Super OLED is controlled on a pixel-to-pixel basis, you can rest assured that your blacks will be d...

Samsung OLED! (and LED, Plasma and more…)

Samsung OLED! (and LED, Plasma and more…)

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Organic Light-Emitting Diode TVs offer the promise of the best picture quality ever (and yes, we’re including CRT). Long “vaporware” in the TV world, 2012 might be the year we see actual models. Samsung’s 55-inch model sure seems like the real deal… maybe. They’re promising a delivery in 2012, but at the moment there’s no pricing, release date, or even a model number. We remain optimistic, but skeptical. HDGuru was told it was advancements to the lifespan of the blue phosphor that allowed development of OLED into a real (potentially) product this year.

Samsung teases 'Super' OLED TV with CES banner

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

The CES showfloor doesn't open until next week, but here's one reason to arrive early in Las Vegas. Banners are popping up outside the convention center, and one of the big ones looming over the Central Hall entrance advertises its OLED TV presence. The choice of hyperbole specifically is "Ultimate TV... Super OLED Sensation." If we had to guess what size this "Super OLED" TV would be, we'd probably say 55 inches — that's how large LG's recently-announced (and self-touted "world's largest") OLED TV is, and that's the size Samsung is expected to release before the 2012 Olympics. With LG's set also being just 4mm thin, we're curious to see if Samsung will try to match the thickness or try to d...

Samsung's Smart TV SDK reaches 3.0 with support for USB controllers, payment and ads

Even though all signs indicate Samsung will be joining the Google TV party shortly, it's not going to give up on its own existing Smart TV platform just yet. We don't know if it will run the two side by side as it has operated with Yahoo! Widgets, but the Korean manufacturer has announced it plans to release version 3.0 of its SDK January 5th. The new Samsung Apps toolkit supports mobile devices and TV sets, and lets developers build in support for remote controls, as well as USB mice, keyboards or gamepads. Of course, not all devs will work for free, so they're also adding a way for them to get paid through the built-in payment system or advertisements. Currently, Samsung claims 25,000 deve...
