BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 beta coming soon, RIM confirms

Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook product manager, Michael Clewley, has confirmed through his Twitter page that the company is planning to release a beta version of its 2.1 Playbook OS by the “end of May.” After signing up as a BlackBerry developer, the update will be pushed to eligible devices once it is released. The company’s previous update brought native contacts, calendar and email to the tablet. Details surrounding the PlayBook OS 2.1 beta are not yet available.

RIM launches BlackBerry Mobile Fusion

RIM announced BlackBerry Mobile Fusion last November, a new enterprise service that will allow companies to manage multiple types of devices from a single, web-based interface, and the company says the service will launch today. The service can manage smartphones running BlackBerry 7 or earlier, PlayBook tablets, and tablets and smartphones running Android and iOS. RIM registers 6600 developers in 11 days with free BlackBerry PlayBook promotion

RIM has recently extended a promotion that gave away a free BlackBerry PlayBook to anyone who submitted a "viable" app to BlackBerry App World. The promotion was to expire on Monday but RIM's Head of Developer Relations Alec Saunders has extended the deadline for the free PlayBook to March as developers have been signing up with the Canadian based manufacturer.
Saunders sent out a tweet on Tuesday proudly announcing that RIM had signed up 6600 developers in the previous 11 days. Developers have told Berry Review that it has been taking longer than usual to register as a developer, but RIM is supposed to have everything working fine now. RIM extends free PlayBook offer for Android developers

Earlier this month, Research in Motion began to offer free BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to any Android developers that repackaged their apps for App World. Due to overwhelming interest, the Monday deadline for registration has been extended to February 15th and all developers will have until March 2nd to submit their apps. As of last Friday, there had been more than 1,500 app submissions and over 6,600 new developers registered in the BlackBerry App World according to RIM. According to a post on its blog late Monday, the company is “working around the clock to approve vendor registrations and app submissions.”

RIM to unveil two new PlayBook tablets in 2012?

Okay, so maybe 2011 wasn’t a good year for the BlackBerry PlayBook but RIM isn’t giving up on the tablet market yet. N4BB claims its hearing from voices on the inside that RIM is preparing to launch not one, but two PlayBook-branded tablets this year. One will be a lower-end 7-inch model and the other will be a premium 1o-inch tablet.
The 7-inch PlayBook will be much like its predecessor. It won’t feature 4G, but instead 3G+ (otherwise known as 3.5G) which is still has more than adequate Internet speeds. I’d imagine it would also get a spec bump to handle PlayBook OS 2.0 due for a release at the end of February, according to N4BB. The tablet itself is apparently slated for release some time....

A BlackBerry roadmap was obtained by N4BB and shows some very important dates for 'Berry fans. Let's cut to the chase. Speculation is circulating that RIM has only one BlackBerry 10 model that it is working on, and whatever that model is will be launched in September according to the roadmap. The first BlackBerry 10 powered SuperPhone is supposed to be called the BlackBerry London or possibly the BlackBerry Surfboard. Anti-jailbreak BlackBerry PlayBook patch cracked in one day

RIM's attempt to stomp out jailbreaking proved ineffective early Wednesday. Less than a day after posting a 1.0.8.6067 update to cover the security exploit used to open up the OS, a version 2.1 beta update for the DingleBerry root has come to get around the patch. Users have to install the crack before they apply the patch, but they just need to run a single command-line task to get root-level access.

After a brief lead-up period, the Dingleberry jailbreak for the BlackBerry PlayBook is now publicly available, though still in a very early beta. The exploit used to gain root access is actually pretty simple. PlayBook backup files used in the BlackBerry Desktop Software apparently aren’t signed, which means those files can be used to launch just about whatever you want on the device. So what can you do with it? Well, not too much yet, and the three guys behind Dingleberry are hoping that the developer community at large will run with this and do all sorts of neat stuff, but for now one of the devs have posted instructions on how to get the Android Market up and running on the PlayBook.

Last week we posted some videos of a rooted BlackBerry PlayBook from the collaborative minds of Neuralic, Xpvqus, and Cmwdotme a.k.a. Chris Wade. Now, the development team behind the jailbreak tool, Dingleberry, have officially released the beta version on their project website.
As we previously reported, the trio states that the a Dingleberried PlayBook is able to stream content from Hulu and a Dingleberried Playbook running the 2.0 beta can run the Android Market and install APK files without having to convert them into BAR files.

RIM takes $485 million hit on the PlayBook in Q3

Just how much is the PlayBook costing RIM? The BlackBerry-maker revealed that it will be taking a $485 million hit in the third fiscal quarter, thanks to the QNX-packing tablet. The charge reflects flagging sales on the PlayBook, which moved some 500,000 units in its first quarter, followed by 250,000 and 150,000 in the following two. In spite of such numbers, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer remains committed to the tablet, which has seen some healthy price drops in recent weeks, in hopes of staying competitive amongst new crop of budget tablets.

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, may eventually run full Android

An exploit found in the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet a few months ago has begun to bear fruit for a trio of scrappy developers. The rooting application, which will be made publicly available within the next week, will be called Dingleberry, and lets you do a few cool things. Hulu, which had previously been blocked when visited through the BlackBerry browser, is now accessible. The BlackBerry PlayBook is looking increasingly like going the way of the HP TouchPad, with RIM offering the tablet to employees at a huge discount.
RIM's latest desperate attempt to shift some of the crippling inventory currently launguishing in warehouses sees the company offer PlayBooks for just $99 to all employees - thats about £62.
Through a corporate portal workers can buy up to eight PlayBooks at the discounted rate, which also sees the 32GB device on sale for $149 and the 64GB model for just $199.
The deal could be the latest step towards offering those prices to the public in a fire sale reminiscent of HP's ill-fated WebOS tablet, which saw a surge in sales when reduced to under £1...

Best Buy runs out of BlackBerry PlayBook stock, cancels orders

It looks like Best Buy over-promised to customers eager to snag a BlackBerry PlayBook for $300 off. Despite having the same attractive offer as many retailers over Black Friday and the weekend, Best Buy appears to be unable to fulfill many (and some say all) orders of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Prices were as low as $200, so as you can expect there was a lot of interest in the tablet as a holiday gift. Finding the cheap 16 GB model at retail stores might be a little tricky at this point, but it looks like stock is still strong when ordering directly from RIM at ShopBlackBerry.com.
