Polaroid Announces Android-Powered SC1630 Digital Camera

Cameras are built into virtually every smartphone and tablet sold today, but even the best are a bit lacking in image quality. In order to keep things small, the cameras used fixed focal length lenses an very small image sensors, which has left them lagging behind when compared to dedicated digital cameras.
Polaroid's SC1630 digital camera aims to change that. The 16-megapixel shooter features a 3x (36-108mm f/3.1-5.6 equivalent) optical zoom lens, a feature that sets it apart from other Android devices.

The camera modules in smartphones continually improve, and these days there are phones like the iPhone 4S and the Nokia N9 who can take snapshots as good -- and sometimes better -- than point-and-shoots. Polaroid's known for making cameras, but its newest device, a rebrand of the Aigo A8 we saw at CES last year, flips the script by taking a 16 megapixel point-and-shoot and shoving an Android phone inside.

Polaroid has been in the photograph business for as long as I can remember. The first camera I can remember having around as a kid was one of the old instant cameras from Polaroid. The company has unveiled a new line of accessory lenses that will work for DSLRs, camcorders, and cameras. It’s not exactly clear from the details released so far what specific cameras these lenses will fit.
