Onkyo intros a new pair of TX-NR AV receivers, prices start at $999

Posted on Mar 29, 2012 by MG1

Shortly after introducing its entry-level TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 receivers, Onkyo is taking the wraps off of a fresh pair of souped-up, pricier AV boxes. Both part of the TX-NR family, the TX-NR717 ($999) and TX-NR818 ($1,119) are carrying on the 7.2-channel audio tradition seen on their lower-priced siblings, while a Qdeo processor handles all video upscaling duties -- yes, 4K included. The 3D-ready couple is also packing THX Select 2 Plus certification, a whopping eight HDMI ports on each box, DTS-HD Master Audio / Dolby TrueHD decoding and a revamped 1080p GUI. Onkyo's also said iOS and Kindle Fire variants of its Android Remote App are in the works, though mum's the word on when they'll b...

Onkyo Launches Entry-Level Receivers with Upgraded Features

Onkyo Launches Entry-Level Receivers with Upgraded Features

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG3

It used to be that picking up an entry-level receiver meant settling for the absolute bare bones and getting little in return for your investment. The latest from Onkyo buck that trend by offering much more than one might expect from low priced receivers. The TX-SR313 is the cheapest in the series ($299) and still packs a discrete-component output stage instead of an integrated amp.

$699 will get you the 7.2 channel NR616 network receiver, complete with THX Select2 Plus certification, streaming from MP3tunes and Spotify and Qdeo video processing that scales video up to 4K if you have a compatible display. The NR515 ($599) offers many of the same features but drops things like a third zon...

Onkyo BD-SP809 Blu-ray deck - for performance over price

Onkyo BD-SP809 Blu-ray deck - for performance over price

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

You can get a Blu-ray player with a packet of cornflakes these days, figuratively speaking. The decks are so cheap that, for most, the very concept of a BD spinner costing £500 (a monkey, in cockney rhyming slang) is pure insanity.
However, in the world of home cinema, you tend to get what you pay for. And with cheap and cheerful Blu-ray players, that generally means that you'll get the ability to play high-def movie content, but at the detriment to performance.
Therefore, Onkyo still believes that there's enough of us out there who favour video and audio quality over our bank balances, and as such has crafted the BD-SP809, with a street price of £499.99.
It's a mighty metal beast that weigh...

Microsoft scores again with Onkyo Android patent deal

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MicrosoftOnkyo

Directly following Android-related patent agreements with General Dynamics Itronix and Velocity Micro this week, Microsoft announced a similar agreement with Onkyo regarding Android tablets. In other Android-related legal news, Oracle announced it is demanding $2.6 billion in payments from Google in its Android patent lawsuit, but the total amount could swell to over $6 billion if Oracle wins triple damages.
Maybe it doesn't matter whether Windows Phone takes off or not -- Microsoft is already making a bundle off of Android. The ultra-litigious software giant has entered into its third legal agreement of the week related to patents it claims aspects of Android infringe.
After corralling Gen....
