Intel held a keynote at Hot Chips conference in Stanford University last week where it announced some details of upcoming Itanium CPUs. While originally meant to conquer the enterprise market, Itanium is mostly used for the ultra high end enterprise space. Itanium isn't backwards compatible with x86 and uses Intel's VLIW IA-64 architecture. Intel claims that Itanium is a four billion dollar business and more than 80% of world's top 100 companies utilize Itanium.

The codename for the new CPUs is "Poulson" and it is the 10th Itanium CPU lineup. The biggest updates are a new architecture, twice as many cores (up to eight), twice the instruction throughput and a 32nm process.

Fans of creative nickel-and-dime schemes will love this: Buy an Intel i3-2312M, i3-2102 or Pentium G622 and it just isn't powerful enough, you can grab a $50 upgrade card. Enter the card's code online and hidden capacity in your chip will suddenly become available for use. Those with longer memories will find this offer familiar, because Intel did the same thing last year with the Pentium G6951. You may be peeved at the idea of buying the same thing twice, but remember that the company is only targeting the limited service at low-end consumers who want a little bit extra from their budget desktop. If you're interested in how much performance can be wrung from these chips, check out the sourc...

Sandy Bridge-E to ship without CPU cooler

Sandy Bridge-E to ship without CPU cooler

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 by MG3

Intel has decided to ship its Sandy Bridge-E processors without a bundled CPU cooler, as vrzone reported:
How many of you rely on aftermarket coolers for your CPU? We don't know anyone that thinks Intel's stock coolers are great and when details reached us of Intel not shipping coolers with its upcoming Sandy Bridge-E processors we were at first surprised, but considering the target market it makes a lot of sense.

Intel has posted an upgrade service page on their website which indicates that Intel will again be offering upgradeable CPUs. This is not totally unheard of since Intel offered a similar service for Pentium G6951 a year ago. Back then, $50 bought you Hyper-Threading and 1MB more L3 cache, and the SKU of the CPU changed to G6952. This time Intel has expanded the lineup and the upgrade service is available for three CPUs: i3-2312M, i3-2102 and Pentium G622. Unfortunately we don't know the price yet but we do know that the upgrade offers higher frequency and possibly increased amount of cache.

Filed in: NotebooksIntel

There's a new segment of portable PCs coming soon, and they're called Ultrabooks. Intel took the wraps off of the design direction at Computex 2011 for exceptionally thin-and-light notebooks that take many design cues from Apple's MacBook Air.
Asus and Acer have already announced Ultrabook products, and there will be plenty more coming because Intel is pushing hard for the growth of this new segment that the chip giant believes will be 40 percent of the consumer laptop market segment by the end of 2012.

Back in early 2009, we ran a piece in the QuickStart section of Maximum PC magazine on what effect the recession was having on the tech sector and what it might mean for company roadmaps. For that piece, an Intel spokesperson told us during a phone interview the chip giant has been through tough economic times before and the company understands "you can't save your way out of a recession; you spend your way out." It's over two years later now, times are still tough, and Intel is still spending money.
Announced on Wednesday, Intel Labs said it's investing $30 million on two new Intel Science and Technology Centers (ISTC) located at Carnegie Mellon University. These new centers will focus on c...

Intel grows in Q2 2011 GPU market

Posted on Aug 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Graphic CardsIntel

Jon Peddie Research published its report about the GPU market in Q2 2011. The firm says GPU shipments were up 6.3 percent sequentially while PC sales grew just 2.4 percent, and that Intel made big gains in marketshare at the expense of both AMD and NVIDIA.
Between the first and second quarters, Intel purportedly enjoyed a 19.6% surge in shipments of graphics-enabled products, while AMD and Nvidia saw respective declines of 7.3% and 5.3%. Interestingly, JPR also says that Nvidia's slice of the discrete graphics market got 30% larger in the second quarter, reportedly because of design wins in many Sandy Bridge notebooks.
The research firm also sprinkles in a bit of news about the overall grap...

Intel's integrated graphics processors have long had a poor reputation when it comes to gaming, and while the IGPs get a little closer to competitiveness with each iteration, that is still largely true. However, there's another area in which the chips are surprisingly competitive: workstation applications.
At least on paper, Intel's current IGPs are fully certified for high-end programs like Photoshop CS5, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks, and future Ivy Bridge and Haswell IGPs add a lot of other big names to the list. This slow build-up of certifications means that Intel solutions may begin to replace dedicated FireGL and Quadro cards from AMD and nVidia in low and mid-end workstations, another cont...
