Where Does webOS Go From Here?

Where Does webOS Go From Here?

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Praise tech Jesus, webOS still has a pulse! The mobile OS seemingly doomed to a cold eternity in a digital graveyard has been granted an open source reprieve. Great! Only question is, what comes next?
Obviously webOS is a platform built for smartphones and tablets, but HP making it open source means people can find some weird uses for the little OS that could. How would webOS be best put to use? We already know we'll probably see another tablet from HP. They've conceded that much and we like that. A lot. But we've got some other ideas for how webOS could be used.

HP sells 7,850 refurbished TouchPads during eBay fire sale

HP sells 7,850 refurbished TouchPads during eBay fire sale

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

This weekend's eBay TouchPad sale saw 7,850 of the refurbished devices find buyers, which is all the stock HP had on hand. The 16GB eBay listing saw 2,316 sales, priced at $99, while the 32GB model sold 5,534 units at $149. All were sold in less than 25 minutes, making eBay and PayPal work much slower and return a number of errors and unsuccessful transactions.
The flat shipping fee of $19 was also universally panned in the comments by buyers and potential customers, especially since HP usually offers free shipping on refurbished PCs and TouchSmart all-in-ones. The sales were limited to just two units per bidder, though multiple listings meant keen buyers could buy more than just this limit.

HP's Hackable Printers: The Lawsuit

HP's Hackable Printers: The Lawsuit

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: HP

Three days ago, we brought you news of how researchers have made proof-of-concept attacks on HP printers by reprogramming their firmware. Among other things, these attacks could deliberately cause the fuser in a printer to overheat and singe the paper, until shut down by a built-in unoverridable thermal switch, preventing a fire. Now, in light of this, a lawsuit has been filed by David Goldblatt of New York, seeking damages for fraudulent and deceptive business practices and is looking for class action status: "As a result of HP's failure to require the use of digital signatures to authenticate software upgrades, hackers are able to reprogram the HP Printers' software with malicious software...

The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation

Fact of the day: Hewlett Packard and Box.net's corporate headquarters are only one block away in Palo Alto, so Meg Whitman could have sealed this deal in a street corner branch of Starbucks. The two companies are teaming up to offer cloud-based collaboration and storage tools to select buyers (but only if they grab the gear via the Smart Buy program). Purchase a HP Compaq 6200 or 6005 Pro Series PC and you'll find 10GB free space waiting for you, plus discounted upgrades. Customers who go for the 8200 Elite Series PC instead, will find a year's free unlimited storage and sync on offer. If that all sounds so exciting that your palms are getting sweaty, head on past the break to find out more.

S&P cuts HP credit rating on lack of strategy, management turnover

S&P cuts HP credit rating on lack of strategy, management turnover

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: HP

Credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded Hewlett-Packard’s credit rating earlier this week, citing poor policies, a high turnover rate among top executives and an unclear strategy. HP’s local and foreign long-term debt ratings now sit at BBB+, down from A, making it more expensive for the company to borrow money. The firm also cut HP’s short-term rating to A-2 from A-1. ”We have concerns that HP’s inconsistent growth strategies and high levels of board of director and senior management turnover have elevated the level of operational and execution risk in the near term,” S&P analyst Martha Toll Reed said in a statement. The agency also said that HP’s $10.2 billion Autonomy acquisitio...

HP will make decision on webOS in two weeks, for realsies

HP will make decision on webOS in two weeks, for realsies

Posted on Dec 01, 2011 by MG1

HP CEO Meg Whitman said a final decision will be made on what the company will do with webOS within the next two weeks. This won’t be like the last time she said they’ll make a decision on webOS, I’m guessing.
Asked by a French newspaper about when the company will make a decision on the mobile platform, Whitman reportedly said, “We should announce our decision in the next two weeks. This is not an easy decision, because we have a team of 600 people which is in limbo. We need to have another operating system.”
The history of webOS is filled with unfulfilled potential, as the platform offered unique user interaction metaphors and was one of the first to actually utilize the cloud for its Syne...

Researchers expose printer vulnerability, turn LaserJets into literal time bombs (update)

Researchers expose printer vulnerability, turn LaserJets into literal time bombs (update)

Your precious printer might seem innocuous but, in reality, it could be a ticking time bomb just waiting for some hacker to trigger it. Oh, and we mean that not just figuratively, but literally as well -- they could actually be caused to burst into flames by some ne'er-do-well half-way around the globe. Of course, the potential doesn't end at remote arson, an attacker could easily gain access to a network or steal documents, and hijacking the lowly device would require little more than printing an infected file. So far researchers at Columbia University have only managed to exploit the hole on HP printers, but it's possible (if not likely) that others are also affected. Most printers look fo...

HP LaserJet printers pose massive security risk, say Columbia University researchers

HP LaserJet printers pose massive security risk, say Columbia University researchers

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Imaging DevicesHP

MSNBC is reporting a security flaw that could affect millions of HP LaserJet printers. According to Ang Cui and Salvatore Stolfo of Columbia University, the issue stems from the fact that the HP LaserJet printers tested do not require a signature or certificate to identify the source of remote software updates. Knowing this, Cui and Stolfo are able to exploit the fact that every time a LaserJet accepts a new job it checks for an included software update.
One demonstration by the duo involved infecting a printer through a virus-laden print job. A tax return sent to the infected printer was then surreptitiously forwarded to a remote computer posing as a hacker's workstation. A second, more ala...

HP TouchPad earns number two tablet spot in U.S. thanks to fire sale

HP TouchPad earns number two tablet spot in U.S. thanks to fire sale

Posted on Nov 23, 2011 by MG1

NPD has concluded in a recent study that the TouchPad, HP’s last webOS product for the foreseeable future, turned out to be the second-most popular tablet in the U.S. so far this year. While it might seem crazy that a dead platform managed to beat out a dearth of Android competition (namely from Samsung), the $100 fire sale following HP’s announcement to cease webOS development obviously helped out a lot. NPD figures HP claimed 17% of the U.S. tablet market share between January and October 2011, followed up by Samsung at 16%, ASUS at 10%, Motorola at 9%, and Acer at 9%.

HP blew $3.3 billion killing Palm and webOS

HP blew $3.3 billion killing Palm and webOS

Posted on Nov 22, 2011 by MG1

HP released its Q4 2011 financial results this afternoon, and while the company did better than Wall Street expected it to in total, it still managed to lose billions of dollars on the webOS platform. Last year, HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion, and today the company admitted how much more money it sunk into webOS this year, only to leave it high and dry halfway through.
According to the company figures, HP spent $3.3 billion on the remainder of Palm and webOS this year, even though it decided that it would discontinue webOS smartphones and tablets this summer. The company did bring in $200 million from the firesale of the TouchPad, but all of those sales were at a loss, so that can't really ...

HP TouchPad pops up on TigerDirect, refuses to roll over and play dead

Time and rapid inventory sell outs might've quenched the fury of late summer's TouchPad firesale. But if you were left outside of the webOS mourning soiree and are still keen to call that HP tab your own, TigerDirect's got a slew of the slates ready for the taking. You won't find that seductive sub-$100 price here, however, the web retailer is offering a rebate that'll cut the 32GB slate down to a very attractive $150. The future may still be uncertain for the mobile OS that was once was and could've been, but at least dual booting Android's a sure thing.

HP unveiled their new 2311gt HD monitor today. The screen measures 23 inches and uses passive 3D technology. It has full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and a 5ms response time. The passive technology uses polarized lenses, which is similar to the 3D technology used in the theaters. HP has included a dual pair of 3D glasses as well. The connection panel includes RGB, DVI, and an HDMI port. This gives the monitor the ability to act like an HDTV, but with limitations. Other major features include a 250 cd/m2 brightness, 2D-to-3D conversion, and a TN LCD display panel. HP stated that the 2311gt will be available soon in the UK. However, the retail price was not announced.
