HP not ditching webOS, just the hardware

Following earlier reports that HP will be discontinuing its webOS ecosystem of devices, including the Veer, Pre3, and TouchPad, an insider source has informed Thisismynext that the company will not be abandoning the platform entirely. The source revealed details from an all-hands meeting held with HP employees in the webOS Global Business Unit that indicate the platform could still live on through licensing.

HP TouchPad may get webOS 3.0.2 update this week; new apps, performance tweaks en route
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsHPTouchPadwebOS 3.0
Great news for all HP TouchPad owners out there – the webOS-powered tablet is about to be treated to a software update this week. That is, of course, if the rumors that are circulating on the web turn out to be true.
According to the said rumors, the HP TouchPad will be receiving an OTA update to webOS 3.0.2, and the improvements that it is expected to bring are anything but merely superficial. First of all, users will be able to get movies and music straight to their TouchPads via the HP Movie Store and HP Music Store apps that are about to be added. The Amazon Kindle and Amazon MP3 apps are also said to be arriving to the tablet at some point this month. Besides that, the email app will b...

HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS, Rubinstein to focus on product innovation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPPalmwebOS
Things haven't been exactly flourishing at HP's webOS division in the last year since the company acquired Palm as reception for both the HP Veer and the HP TouchPad has been lukewarm. And now a major shuffle at the top executive level aims to bring change: HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS replacing Jon Rubinstein, who will now “assume a product innovation role.” But that's not all – HP seems to be also ditching the name Palm completely by renaming the division to “webOS Global Business Unit.”
DeWitt is a sales guy – he has been credited for improving sales and profitability of HP's Personal Systems Group, but he will also be responsible for overseeing R&D and marketing. HP will also try...

HP ponders Windows 8 tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHPWindows 8
On Friday, HP’s brand new webOS-powered TouchPad tablet will make its debut in the United States. Even though HP purchased Palm for $1.2 billion last year so that it could stray away from the Windows-powered tablet market by owning webOS, the company may soon build tablets running Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system. In a recent interview with Fast Company, HP’s president and chief technology officer Phil McKinney suggested that Windows 8 tablets could be in the pipeline. “I’m limited to what I can talk about with Windows 8,” McKinney says. “We’re working very closely with [Microsoft], and I’m going to leave it at that or I’m going to start getting myself into trouble.” We could take ...

HP confirms it's in talks about licensing webOS, Samsung tipped as a possibility
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSamsungHPPalmwebOS
HP CEO Leo Apotheker has already indicated that he's totally open to licensing webOS to other companies, and he's now confirmed that HP has, in fact, been in talks with a "number of companies" about that possibility. Not surprisingly, he didn't get much more specific than that, and went some way to dampen expectations a bit, saying that "there is no time pressure to do this." According to Bloomberg, however, "three people with knowledge of the discussions" say that Samsung is one of the companies HP has had talks with, and one said that the company is specifically interested in possibly using webOS for its Galaxy Tab tablets. HP's Jon Rubinstein also dished a bit more on the subject to This ...

2 reasons why HP and Amazon should team-up to drive webOS forward
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPPalmAmazonwebOS
I’ve been thinking a lot about the webOS prospects recently. You may’ve read my rant on why Nokia should’ve picked Palm/HP’s rather than Microsoft’s mobile platform and now I want to make a case why HP should pitch Amazon to make a webOS-based tablet and how the two companies can help drive webOS forward. I have two reasons why a strategic deal between HP and Amazon could be beneficial for both companies.
