Apple Store planning overnight shift on July 13th, refreshed MacBook Air, Lion release possible

Apple Store planning overnight shift on July 13th, refreshed MacBook Air, Lion release possible

Apple has started to ask Apple Store employees to prepare for an “overnight” shift on July 13th — a sign that the company is prepping a new release of some sort on the next day, 9to5 Mac said. Apple has already confirmed that Mac OS X Lion 10.7 will land in July, and we’re placing bets that’s what we’ll see on the 14th. However, we’re also expecting refreshed MacBook Air notebooks in the imminent future and, since the new MacBook Air will no doubt run OS X Lion, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it launch at the same time. Other specs for the refresh likely include Intel’s new SandyBridge processors and Thunderbolt I/O in place of the DisplayPort. There have even been rumors of a black anodize...

LG Cosmos 2 dummy units entering Verizon stores; rumored to launch on July 14

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

The Motorola DROID 3 is up for sale on Verizon's web page with in-store availability expected on July 14, but it seems like there will be one more device that will hit the carrier's shelves on that exact same day. We are talking about the LG Cosmos 2 feature phone, the successor to the LG Cosmos, and its dummy units have reportedly already made it to some of the carrier's outlets.
That is what a tipster of ours shared with us today along with a photo of a LG Cosmos 2 dummy unit. Unfortunately, there is hardly any information available about the handset right now besides the fact that it will pack a 4-row full QWERTY keyboard just like its predecessor did. Its overall dimensions and display s...

Microsoft could make as much from Android as Google, if it signs licensing deals with all manufacturers

Microsoft could make as much from Android as Google, if it signs licensing deals with all manufacturers

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MicrosoftGoogle

Microsoft is currently wrangling with Android cell phone makers to pay up licensing fees for publicly unknown features or components of Google's mobile OS, for which it probably has filed patents since the dawn of WinMo. Its most popular licensee is HTC, which coughs up $5 per device to Microsoft, and it also signed up Velocity Micro and General Dynamics for the noble cause of padding its bottomline.
The big win, however, will come with Samsung, which might end up paying even more, and, considering it is the world's second largest cell phone manufacturer, this should result in a good chunk of money for Microsoft. Currently Redmond is haggling with Samsung over the terms of the licensing deal...

Sprint To Finally Launch The Motorola Titanium On July 24th?

Sprint To Finally Launch The Motorola Titanium On July 24th?

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Remember the Motorola Titanium? No? Don’t worry: it’s been over two months since Sprint announced it. That’s, like, a million years in the gadget world.
For those who need a recap (I did!), the Titanium is a super-rugged followup to last year’s i1, so it’s resistant to dust, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, the opposite sex, low pressure, and solar radiation — oh, and it’s Android-powered.
As is par for the course these days, Sprint made no mention of pricing or a release date in the original announcement. Fortunately, the guys over at SprintFeed got their hands on the flyer up above, which spills all the relevant beans: it’ll go for $150 after contract, and launch on July 24th.

Toshiba Thrive tablet lands at Best Buy July 10

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

The much-anticipated Toshiba Thrive 3.1 Android tablet will be available to purchase from Best Buy July 10.
The news comes from Best Buy, as I’m still waiting on official word from Toshiba but it looks like you’ll be able to head to the electronics store on Sunday to plunk down some cash for the tablet. You actually won’t have to bring too much cash with you, as the Toshiba Thrive Android 3.1 tablet will cost $479.99 with 16 GB and the 32 GB model will cost $579.99. An 8 GB model for $429 is also expected to be available but it’s unclear if this will be at all stores or limited to Best Buy’s website.

iOS 5 Beta Reportedly Sets One Developer’s iPhone Cable Ablaze

iOS 5 Beta Reportedly Sets One Developer’s iPhone Cable Ablaze

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Oh, the many woes of being an early adopter in the Beta software world. The software might crash, causing you to lose all your work! It may have gaping security issues, leaving an entry way for malicious misdoers! It may start your stuff on fire! Wait, what?
According to developer Gus Pinto (who sum ups his life in under 140 characters as “Pioneering Mac Desktop Virtualization. iOS, Mac & Android Development”), that last bit is exactly what happened to his iPhone 4 running a Developer Beta build of iOS 5.
Early this morning, Gus tweeted out “My charging cable caught on fire while charging my iPhone 4 running iOS5. #fail”, providing the above shot to back up his claim.

Droid 3 sadly shipping with locked bootloader

Droid 3 sadly shipping with locked bootloader

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Well, we hate to be the bearers of bad news but, looks like the Droid 3 will not be shipping with the unlocked bootloader Motorola promised us. According to a Motorola support forum manager the latest, landscape QWERTY slider from the company is not sporting the new unlockable firmware found on the Xoom. Now, before everyone gets up in arms, lets remember that Moto said it wouldn't be offering the new bootloader till "late 2011," and it's entirely possible the Droid 3 could shed those shackles with a future software update. So, we understand you're a little disappointed but, patience is a virtue friends.

Amazon could ship 1.2 million tablets this year

Amazon could ship 1.2 million tablets this year

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Amazon

The Amazon Android tablets are almost definitely coming soon and a new report from DigiTimes suggests that the company is preparing to have 1.2 million tablets ready by the third quarter. This would put it behind only one other tablet maker: Apple.
DigiTimes has been hit or miss with these types of things before but it generally is spot on with supplier information. The report said:
Among orders from non-iPad vendors, those from Amazon are said to be the most positive, with demand for touch panels likely to reach two million units for the August-September period, the sources indicated, noting that shipments of tablet PCs to Amazon are expected to reach 1-1.2 million units by a conservative e...

Samsung Galaxy S II teardown reveals major redesign, cutting-edge tech

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

As part of its new Teardown Research Service, market research firm ABI Research has torn Samsung’s Galaxy S II apart in order to analyze and test the components Samsung used to build its latest flagship device. “If you are looking to keep up with the latest technology in 2011, the Galaxy S II is a good place to start,” ABI Research’s report states, listing the device’s major changes compared to the original Galaxy S as including the Exynos dual-core processor, a new single-packaged multi-band multi-mode radio from RFMD, a new CMOS-based antenna switch and a lower-power XMM6260 cellular chipset from Infineon. “Samsung started from scratch with this phone: almost every component is new,” ABI R...

That did not take long. If you (understandably) held of upgrading your HTC HD2 to Mango due to the inability to install applications you will be glad to hear XDA-Dev member elfinlazz has corrected those particular issues, enabling side loading and including a working Marketplace fixer.
Early reports are also of issues with storage, Wi-Fi and Skydrive having been corrected.
Of course the 7592 build is earlier than the 7661 build currently available to developers, but then we have been told even this build is months old in any case.

Panda Takes On LulzSec in Latest Security Report

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

The second quarter of 2011 was "one of the worst on record" for global IT security, but media spent too much time focusing on "hacktivist" groups like LulzSec, according to Panda Security's latest research report on the state of cybercrime.
"As the report outlines, this quarter has been one of the worst on record, with hacking groups Anonymous and LulzSec causing widespread mayhem and organizations such as RSA Security, the U.S. Defense Department, the International Monetary Fund, the European Space Agency, Sony, Citigroup, and SEGA all falling victims to attacks," the IT security firm writes in an introduction to its quarterly report for the April to June period.
In the report, Panda chides...

Firefox 7 Arrives in Aurora Channel with Memory Optimizations

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

Firefox has been much maligned for its gluttonous memory consumption habits for a number of years now. After having feigned ignorance for what seemed like an eternity, Mozilla finally decided to grab the bull by the horns last month when it launched the “MemShrink” project to tackle this problem.
The open-source outlet has already found a fix that it plans to implement in Firefox 7. With Mozilla greatly expediting its release schedule, the release of version 7 isn’t all that far off. However, if you just can’t wait to experience what it feels like, you can do so right now by downloading the latest Aurora build.

Samsung Announces Q2 Profit Drop in HDTV Market

Samsung Announces Q2 Profit Drop in HDTV Market

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Samsung

According to a recent study released by Bloomberg, Samsung is starting to sweat with their HDTV profits. In the second quarter of this year, it was reported that Samsung’s profits fell 26% from what their sales were the same time a year earlier. This news was such a big disappointment for Samsung that it overshadowed the fact the company did impressively well with their mobile division. Between the mobile marker and their HDTV market, the company was still able to record a decent profit overall. But the company is now trying to figure out what to do to raise their HDTV market again.

News of the World Shutting Down Amidst Phone Hacking Scandal

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

The News of the World will shut down after the Sunday edition amidst accusations that its reporters hacked into the cell phones of various crime victims.
After 168 years, the Sunday edition will be the last issue of the News of the World, edited by Colin Myler, James Murdoch, deputy chief operating officer at News Corporation and chairman of News International, said in a statement.
"The good things the News of the World does ... have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong. Indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company," Murdoch said. "We will run no commercial advertisements this weekend. Any advertising space in this last edition will be donated to...
