Hard drive prices settle in at 70 percent above the pre-flood level
Like UnlikeFloods in central Thailand last October knocked out 25 percent of the world's hard drive manufacturing capability. Western Digital's plant in Ayutthaya was completely inundated. It took seven weeks to start production again. By contrast, Seagate's plant in Thailand wasn't in the flood plain, but several of its subcomponent suppliers took a hard hit.

Unreleased Mobile Ivy Bridge CPUs Spotted
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUIntel
CPU World published box numbers for the Core i7-3740QM and i7-3840QM, which will be positioned to support the current 2.6 GHz 3720QM and 2.7 GHz 3820QM models that are positioned on the high-end of the family.
There is not much room for clock speed tweaks for the 3740QM and 3840QM as the flagship model 3920XM already runs at 2.9 GHz. Still, it is pure speculation to talk about clock speeds at this time as Intel denied to comment on the unreleased CPUs. However, the 3840QM could ring in at 2.8 GHz.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersDellXPS One 27-2710
The desktop isn't dead, not by a long shot, though hulking towers might not be as popular as they once were. All-in-one (AIO) desktops, on the other hand, are as vogue as they've ever been, and Dell claims to have "reimagined" the form factor with its new XPS One 27, the company's largest ever AIO and part of the premium XPS performance family with Intel's Ivy Bridge architecture sitting pretty on the inside.

The GeForce GTX 690 might be expensive, but it certainly is sexy. In Taiwan there is this pro-overclocker called TIN and he applied some tender love adn care (TLC) to the card, with the result of setting a new 3DMark 11 record - P20962 points using a single GeForce GTX 690 graphics card (well okay 2 GPUs).

Sony announces Xperia Go and Xperia acro S: waterproof and dual-core (video)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony
If you were underwhelmed by the middling specs of Sony's past toughphones, you might want to take a look at the latest pair to join the 2012 Xperia family. First up, the Xperia go houses a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display with a dual-core 1GHz processor, powering the (unfortunately still) Gingerbread interface. Sony has reiterated that Android 4.0 will find its way to both new devices. The Xperia go also throws in a 5-megapixel camera and the same wet finger tracking seen on the Xperia Active, which will mean the phone can be steered during underwater adventures. You be able to pick from white, black and yellow color options when the phone arrives in Q3 this year.

BlackBerry Curve 9310 / 9320 turns up at FCC, fails to keep a low profile
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryCurve 9320
FCC docs can, from time to time, turn up some welcome device surprises. Not so in this recent RIM filing, as we're treated to yet another in a long line of leaks for the company's Curve 9310 / 9320. The BB OS 7.1 handset, bearing the FCC IDs L6AREY20CW and L6ARFD30CW, has already made several appearances around the globe, preparing for a low-end market berth in Australia, India, Vietnam and the UK. So, aside from RF testing data indicating WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth radios, our familiarity with the phone's specs come from its prior in-the-wild jaunts. Should a single-core processor, 512MB RAM, 3.2-megapixel camera and hardware QWERTY tickle your mobile fancy, then by all means click on the sou...

ASUS MeMO 370T 7-inch tablet clears the FCC, leaves no trace of Ice Cream or Jelly behind
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsASUSGoogleAndroid 4.0
The 7-inch ASUS Eee Pad MeMO ME370T we saw in early prototype form during CES just passed through the FCC. It's still only showing WiFi radios with no trace of a cellular connection, although if it's going to be the $249 standard bearer NVIDIA and ASUS were so excited about, that's to be expected. A juicier rumor that has surfaced in the intervening period however, suggests this device will actually be released as a Google Nexus 7-inch tablet (or just sold from a Google store), and could even feature the next version of Android, codenamed Jelly Bean. It could also sell for as low as $149, although the cheaper reworked version might swap out the Tegra processor for one from Qualcomm. We didn'...

A series of videos released today from Motorola Japan show off the new OS running on a Droid Razr device.
Motorola provided its own skin for Ice Cream Sandwich, replacing most of the smartphone's icons and adding some useful new features.
The biggest change is that four shortcuts now appear on the phone's lock screen, with Motorola adding messaging and dialer shortcuts to the standard Android 4.0 camera and unlock options.

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSonyAT&TXperia ion
The wait for the Sony Xperia Ion in the US has been a long one, but that summer release feels considerably closer now that the Android flagship has swung by the FCC. As we'd hope, the Ion is passing through in full AT&T regalia, carrying the 700MHz and 1,700MHz 4G LTE bands it needs to run on Big Blue -- albeit with a legacy Sony Ericsson label. Along with the expected 850MHz and 1,900MHz HSPA 3G frequencies, we're also seeing an odd instance of 1,700MHz 3G that would normally be reserved for T-Mobile. Given that there isn't matching 2,100MHz support, we're more inclined to see the 1,700MHz block as related to AT&T spectrum refarming or other, more practical purposes than as a ghost of attem...

Moonlight, the open source Silverlight project for Linux, is dead
Like UnlikeWhen critics have pointed out that the Microsoft Silverlight plugin lacks Linux support, fans have pointed to Moonlight, an independent open source Linux / Unix version designed by Miguel de Icaza's Mono project. But while Microsoft has merely backed away from Silverlight development, de Icaza now says that Mono is done with Moonlight altogether. "We have abandoned Moonlight," he says in a recent interview. "These days we no longer believe that Silverlight is a suitable platform for write-once-run-anywhere technology, there are just too many limitations for it to be useful."
