Samsung launching 3D YouTube app for its smart TVs

Samsung launching 3D YouTube app for its smart TVs

Samsung launched "YouTube on TV" today, an app that brings 3D videos from the world's most popular video-sharing site to Samsung smart TVs. The service was announced at IFA in September, and Samsung promised it would be available by the end of 2011, so the release is just in time. 3D video content is still fairly difficult to come by, and the app is an attempt to fill that void with more than 8,000 "high-quality" 3D YouTube videos. Although Samsung's app should work anywhere in the world, YouTube currently only offers 3D video in North America, UK and Japan — the service should roll out to other countries in the future. We can't find the "YouTube on TV" app on Samsung's app store yet, but it...

Skype outs free airport WiFi offer for holiday travelers

Skype outs free airport WiFi offer for holiday travelers

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Skype is offering free airport WiFi access in more than 50 locations between December 21 and 27, promising an hour’s worth of complementary browsing, VoIP calling or video chatting for holiday travelers. The offer uses Skype WiFi, the company’s wireless connectivity system, to log into airport hotspots across the US.

Skype is, unsurprisingly, hoping that users will take advantage of that WiFi access to make a voice or video call. However, if you’d rather just check Facebook, send a few tweets or even check the latest tech headlines on SlashGear, you’ll be able to do that too.

The full list of participating airports is below, and you’ll need the latest version of Skype for Windows, Mac or i...

Apple's new iOS 5.0.1 build fixes SIM card errors for iPhone 4S

Apple's new iOS 5.0.1 build fixes SIM card errors for iPhone 4S

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

As we reported a few days ago, Apple has released a new build of iOS 5.0.1 specifically for iPhone 4S owners — but now we have official word from Apple as to what this update brings. Officially, this new build is designed to fix the pesky "No SIM card" errors that some users have experienced, though there's also new access to the iPhone's file system, which may enable loads of Siri hacking. Unfortunately, this isn't a delta update (which allows you to download only the updated parts of the OS over the air) — you'll need to back up your iPhone, download the software update, and do a full restore from scratch. Still, that's a small price to pay if your phone's SIM card has been acting up.

Google+ gets a 'goodie basket' of changes

Google has announced a 'goodie basket' full of Google+ changes – including a way to dial down the noise and a redesigned Google bar.

The social network got off to a promising start, but Google is aware that all the good work will be for nought if it cannot keep building audience.

So, a raft of changes will certainly be welcomed, especially the headlining feature that allows you to, in Google's words, 'graphic equalize' your stream.

PlayStation Vita sells 321,400 units in opening weekend, some users see problems

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Sony's PlayStation Vita debuted in Japan this past weekend, selling 321,400 units in the first two days of availability according to research firm Enterbrain. It puts the new handheld gaming console on par with the PlayStation Portable, which sold 166,000 units in its first day — but falls short of the 371,000 3DS portables that Nintendo sold in that device's first two days on the market.

The Vita is already experiencing growing pains, however. While we haven't seen any issues with our review unit, RocketNews24 reports that some Vitas are freezing when installing the 1.50 software update, during gameplay, or just upon power-up. Others suffer from unresponsive touchscreens, while one user ha...

Bada 2.0 for Wave devices in 2012 says Samsung

Bada 2.0 for Wave devices in 2012 says Samsung

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

There are more than just a couple of mobile operating systems out there in the world, believe it or not ladies and gentlemen, and if Samsung has anything to say about it in 2012, you’ll know the third heat to be Bada. We’ve had our hands on a few devices late this year running Samsung’s own personal brand of operating system, each of these devices with the lovely “Wave” name attached to them, and we’re to understand today that an update will be coming to a handful of these devices inside 2012. Hopefully it’ll be early on in the year as the last time we heard the Bada 2.0 update was swinging through was inside 2011, and that’s no longer looking too likely.

Mozilla Firefox 9.0 isn't officially due out until tomorrow, but the download is already available from Firefox's website. (The home page still lists version 8.0.1 as the most recent, so you'll have to hit the source links below for the new version.) The update includes Type Inference, a feature that Mozilla says can boost JavaScript performance by up to 30%, and improved theme integration and two finger swipe navigation for OS X Lion. Finally, there's the usual host of bug fixes and stability improvements.

Mozilla started a new rapid release development cycle this year that matches Google's development pace for Chrome — it plans to release a new version of Firefox every six weeks — and th...

Sony 'sorry' for PS Vita bugs

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Sony has apologised to early PlayStation Vita adopters after this weekend's Japanese launch was blighted by a host of software bugs.

The company enjoyed a strong opening weekend of sales, but users have complained of a host of flaws, causing Sony to issue an immediate software fix.

Among the faults, shown off in videos users have uploaded to YouTube (see below), are complaints of unresponsive touchscreens and complete system freezes.

Other users have reported that the device cannot be shut down during online play and will not power up after it has been charging.

IBM predicts mind-controlled smartphones in the next five years

IBM predicts mind-controlled smartphones in the next five years

Since 2006, IBM has predicted what technological advances the next five years will bring as part of its "5 in 5" series, and this year the company says that by 2017 the technology to read brain impulses will have advanced to the point where you could conceivably have a baseball hat that reads your mind and transmits your thoughts to your smartphone. This sounds great, but the recent "Project Black Mirror" Siri hack / hoax brought some attention to thought-controlled computing and it sounds like this technology is still much more than five years away.

How-to: Build a killer gaming PC for under $1,000

Ah, the self-built PC. It wasn’t until the turn of this century that computer components were finally affordable enough for the regular Joe and Vlad to build their own, but we made up for lost time in a hurry. The insatiable appetite for newer and better hardware intermingled with the wealth of knowledge that was the internet to produce some wonderful DIY PCs. Oh sure, garish LED lights would peek out at you from some overzealous builder’s case, but at least they were a sign of the close bond shared between a machine and the human that built it.

Modern trends have threatened to leave the custom-built computer behind, what with multifunctional home consoles and constantly connected mobile de...

Android is immune to viruses, Windows Phone is not, says Orange customer support

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Okay, Windows Phone handsets may not be perfect when it comes to malware and exploits, but they are definitely safer than their Android counterparts, don't you think? Well, we now know of at least one person in the world who would disagree with that statement, and the disturbing part is that their job expects them to be much more knowledgeable on the matter.

What you see below is an excerpt from a conversation between an Orange service representative and a subscriber. In a nutshell, the unsuspecting user is being misled into believing that Windows Phone devices are prone to getting viruses, while Android smartphones are more or less immune to such problems.
