Twitter talks performance boosts
Like UnlikeThis week twitter announced that it was implementing some changes to improve performance on twitter.com. The company is focusing on increasing the speed and optimizing operations for improved performance. Twitter notes that its September 2010 update centered on web application architecture to push all the UI rendering and logic to JavaScript running on the user browsers, but that limited support for optimizations available on servers.

Is This Finally a Toughphone Worth Buying?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSonyXperia advance
Sony has just announced that it's launching a new toughphone, called the Xperia Advance. Unlike previous examples of hardy handsets, though, this one actually looks normal—and its specs aren't too shabby either.
Most phones designed to take knocks look like something you'd give a child to play with. But the Xperia Advance actually looks... kinda OK. OK enough that you wouldn't cringe every time you took it out of your pocket, at least. And while it's hardly the most advanced smartphone on the market, it's specs aren't disgraceful.

Intel details 14 dual-core Ivy Bridge processors ahead of Computex
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUIntel
Intel announced its quad-core Ivy Bridge processors in April, but we've known that dual-core CPUs must be on the way too. And alas, the chip maker does have some up its sleeve -- 14, to be exact. Core i5 and Core i7 versions will be the first to ship, with Core i3 processors launching later this year along with new Pentiums and Celerons. Of the 14 dual-core processors, six are desktop-grade. The rest are mobile, though four are ultra-low voltage (which will be denoted by a U at the end of their name). Computex is just around the corner, and we expect to see plenty of Ivy Bridge systems -- especially Ultrabooks with ultra-low voltage CPUs -- there next week. In the meantime, we've already rev...

ASUS Readies Two Variants of Maximus V Formula Motherboard
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotherboardsASUSMaximus V Formula
For various reasons, ASUS confined its Z77 Express-based Republic of Gamers (ROG) lineup to just the micro-ATX Maximus V Gene, and although we've got to see its ATX sibling, the Maximus V Formula on several occasions, ASUS didn't officially launch it. According to a new report by VR-Zone, ASUS will be offering two SKUs of the Maximus V Formula. The company is known to offer these tiny sub-variants with its ROG products. Sometimes the differences between such sub-variants are as major as inclusion/exclusion of a component (eg: Crosshair V Formula/ThunderBolt), and as minor as inclusion of a game (eg: Rampage IV Extreme/Battlefield 3). In this case, it's the inclusion/exclusion of a component ...

Sony to reveal PS3, Vita ebook platform
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3PSVITA
If you like the idea of ebooks, but hate the fact that you can’t read them from 10 feet away on the living room sofa, Sony might have the solution to your problems. Okay, we’re exaggerating a bit. There’s a rumor that Sony is working on a digital books section to the PlayStation Store, but it is hardly going to try to be a competitor to the Kindle, iBooks, or Nook.

MegaUpload's Defense Files for Dismissal of All Government Charges
Like UnlikeLess than 24 hours after winning a crucial decision regarding evidence disclosure, MegaUpload's legal team is going for the jugular—filing a motion to dismiss in District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
The legal team filed the motion on the grounds that the US government had violated MU's due process rights by destroying its business without properly serving the company. Coincidentally, unlike people, companies cannot be served outside of US territory (like, say, New Zealand). Per the statute, due process rights are harmed when, "a liberty or property interest which has been interfered with by the State and that the procedures attendant upon that deprivation were constitutionall...

Rumor: Sony to acquire a cloud gaming company
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
Rumors have been doing the rounds the past few days claiming Sony might be making a move into the cloud gaming space. Speculation first started when VG247 posted an article saying that there would be a partnership deal announced at E3 between PlayStation and a leading cloud gaming service. There aren’t exactly a lot of players to pick from so this was inferred to mean either Gaikai or OnLive.

Sony PlayStation 4 tipped for 2013
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 4
With games such as Doom 3: BFG Edition still making waves in the industry of what some would call a fading wave for console gaming, Sony’s PlayStation 4′s release in 2013 is sure to be a hit. That’s what “sources close to the matter” speaking with the Wall Street Jounral are saying in hopes that the news this week that an ultra-slick disk-less cloud-based PlayStation was being released was bashed by early critics. This situation reflects essentially what happened when the PSP Go was released, failure that it was with downloadable content only, ditching physical game units altogether.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Microsoft has created a new version of its online productivity suite Office 365 specifically for customers in the US government. Office 365 for Government includes the same services as the regular version — including Exchange Online and Office Professional Plus — but differs by storing data in what Microsoft calls a "segregated community cloud." As with Google, Microsoft is also touting the security of its cloud service, and today announced that Office 365 supports a number of security standards including ISO 27001, SAS70 Type II, EU Safe Harbor, the US Federal Information Security Management Act, and many more. Meanwhile, the government version is expected to support IPv6 by September, and ...

PayPal mobile payments hit the UK, filling your closet just went wireless (video)
Like UnlikePayPal's mobile payments have been on a whirlwind American tour this year, but they haven't had a chance to cross the border so far. Someone must have finally stamped the company's passport, since it's now an option for UK residents to pay using the InStore app for Android or iOS. A trio of fashion outlets -- Coast, Oasis and Warehouse -- can soon scan an on-screen barcode to take payment for that posh new shirt instead of requiring ye olde wallet. As it is in the US, there's no need for any NFC magic or even an Internet connection to clinch the deal, and there's still the same access to discounts and refunds as for paper- and plastic-wielding buyers. A total of 230 shops will take your PayP...
