TiVo shows a Q1 net loss of $20.8 million, will launch TV Everywhere web portal soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Tivo
TiVo has released its financial results for Q1 2013, and right off the bat they show a wider than expected net loss of $20.8 million. This is despite a rise in revenue and subscribers (driven mostly by Virgin Media, which added 242,000), and the company expects another loss in the second quarter due to rising litigation costs in its ongoing cases against Motorola and Time Warner Cable. We've already heard about TiVo's new Stream placeshifting box, IP multiroom extender and six-tuner XG1 gateway, but the new product news is a plan to launch TV Everywhere streaming. The first cable operator joining in the new venture will be RCN, and TiVo says its portal will allow providers using its DVRs to ...

TiVo sues Motorola and Time Warner over DVR patents
Like UnlikeFiled in: Tivo
Motorola is a big provider of DVR systems to cable companies, which is where Time Warner comes into the picture. The three patents include Patent #6,233,389- “Multimedia time warping system,” Patent #7,529,465- “System for time shifting multimedia content streams,” and Patent #6,792,195- “Method and apparatus implementing random access and time-based functions on a continuous stream of formatted digital data.” I’m certainly no patent savant, but those sound key to DVR functionality.
It’s not clear when the case will be heard by courts. I hope suits like this don’t eventually mean the DVRs most of us use from cable and satellite providers lose functionality. I’d wager if it comes down to it M...

It's too early to know if this is the big TiVo update fans have been waiting for since the release of the Premiere, but there's no doubt it's a significant one. For starters, the guide has finally gotten the upgraded HD treatment -- no word if it is the only remaining old screen to get refreshed. Next up is official Premiere-to-Premiere streaming, which frees your recorded TV to be watched in any room of the house, even if the content is marked Copy Once. Other notable improvements include the integration of Hulu Plus content in TiVo search results, a revamped discover bar that actually discloses why the content is featured -- we assume this will make it more useful -- and hitting select whi...

TiVo, AT&T patent settlement will send at least $215 million TiVo's way through 2018

After leveraging its DVR patent portfolio into a $500 million settlement with Dish Network and Echostar TiVo has made it rain again, cutting a mutual patent licensing deal with AT&T that settles their litigation and will result in at least $215 million heading its way through 2018. Additional license fees are possible based on AT&T's U-verse DVR subscriber base, so besides the $51 million up front and recurring payments after that, there could be even more money at stake.
