Sony PS4 and Xbox 720 to star in shock E3 2012 unveiling?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyMicrosoft
E3 2012 is shaping up to be a show to remember, as a new source claims that both both the Xbox 720 and Sony PS4 are due to be unveiled.
The show, which will take place in June, is expected to mark the full launch of the Wii U following its first airing at last year’s show. As such, the pressure is on Microsoft and Sony to provide something in the way of competition other than peddling their now ageing wares.
“You have my personal word on this – the source is exemplary, 100% concrete, ultra high level,” says MCV Editor Ben Parfitt when explaining that both Sony and Microsoft will definitely be bringing new hardware to the table.

Sony and Nintendo drop SOPA support amid Anonymous threats
Like UnlikeFiled in: SonyNintendo
Sony and Nintendo have dropped support for the controversial SOPA bill, backtracking on what has been accused as a pro-censorship push by legislators amid threats of internet attack from groups like Anonymous. Both companies are now absent from the official list of supporters [pdf link] of the Stop Online Piracy Act, along with games publisher Electronic Arts, though it’s unclear how much of the decision – by Sony Computer Entertainment, at least – was swayed by Anonymous’ threats to target first the PlayStation Network and then individual executives at the firm.

PlayStation Vita hack prints 'hello world' via PSP emulator
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Any time a new console is released, a global countdown begins until the first intrepid hacker breaks its armor and gains control over its internal hardware and features. The race is now on to crack the recently-released PlayStation Vita, and at least one hacker has shown that code can be executed on the handheld by printing "hello world" and displaying some festive lights on the screen — but that doesn't mean the Vita has been compromised. That's because these exploits aren't actually accessing the Vita's native hardware, but rather running inside the PSP emulator that allows users to play downloadable PSP games. It's hard to say if there's any way to break through the walls of that sandbox ...

Sluggish Demand for PlayStation Vita in Japan
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
A new report coming out of Japan has raised a few eyebrows in regards to Sony's latest attempt to recapture the gaming spotlight. According to new figures, after just one week of strong sales, demand for the device has plummeted in Japan, usually one of its strongest markets.
The new numbers come via Japanese research site Media Create Co., which claims Sony only sold 72,479 units during the week ending Dec. 25, a steep drop off from the device's debut sales of approximately 324,859 units. While the numbers are not backed by official Sony figures, and the company has declined to comment on the research firm's numbers, the message is nevertheless clear: the PlayStation Vita may be offering mo...

Nintendo, Sony back off of SOPA support
Like UnlikeFiled in: SonyNintendo
A quiet update to the list of Stop Online Piract Act supporters (PDF) has shown that Nintendo and Sony have backed away from the proposed bill. Both were originally endorsing the bill as of November but quietly removed themselves from the list sometime in the past month. Neither has acknowledged the change in attitude.
Game developer EA has also dropped its SOPA support.
All three have an interest in curbing piracy of their games. They may have withdrawn support after seeing the full consequences of the bill, which could see site taken down or blocked if even just a small portion of its content was deemed illegal. As drafted, it would also compromise Internet security by taking apart the DNS...

Tablet S gets $100 haircut from Sony
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSonyTablet S
Sony is greeting 2012 by cutting $100 off the price of its Sony Tablet S. The more traditional of the manufacturer's two tablets, the haircut brings the 16GB model to $399.99 and the 32GB version to $499.99. There is no indication that Sony is cutting the price in order to clear inventory nor is there any sign that the Japanese tech giant is planning a sequel that it needs to clear room for. In fact, the company recently confirmed that both of its tablets will be getting updated to Android 4.0.
There is some speculation that the Sony Tablet S was in need of a price cut considering that it had failed to break into the top five tablets not named Apple iPad. But with its original pricing simila...

PS Vita Content Manager app forces firmware upgrade?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony hasn't wasted any time getting firmware updates out of the door for its newly-released PlayStation Vita, and some users are reporting that the company is being a little pushier than usual in making sure users upgrade. If a post at Wololo is to be believed, running the Vita's Content Manager software under out-of-date firmware will prompt you to update to the latest version, and the app won't work until you do so. We're unable to confirm this ourselves, as our Vita is already at Version 1.510, but it wouldn't surprise us — the PSP and PS3 often lock access to features such as the PlayStation Store for users who haven't updated their firmware. This case is a little different, though, in t...

Sony Tablet S Ice Cream Sandwich update coming "soon"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsSonyGoogleTablet SAndroid 4.0
Sony UK used its online forum to say that the Ice Cream Sandwich updated for one of its tablets, Tablet S, is coming “soon.” Unfortunately, they weren’t too specific, leaving us pondering what exactly that “soon” means. Is it the first quarter, the second one? It’s really hard to tell, but we do hope Sony, as a reputable company that is focusing a ton of energy on Android, will release the new software update sooner rather than later…
And before I let you go, I have a Tablet S-related confession to make. I find it to be one of the best 10.1-inch Android tablets out there. Simply put – it fits perfectly into the hand, making reading content on it an awesome experience. In other words, that “m...

Sony Tablet S to get Android 4.0, but no release date yet
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsSonyGoogleTablet SAndroid 4.0
Sony Ericsson has already jumped ahead of the rest of the Android manufacturer pack by committing itself to releasing Android 4.0 on a slew of smartphones and even going so far as to to release "preview ROMs" for several of them. On the tablet side, Sony looks like it's being equally aggressive. In a post on its official Sony forums in the UK, a staffer posted a message proclaiming that "Android 4.0 will be available for Sony Tablet." The language was a little vague, but a follow up post narrowed it down to the Sony Tablet S. Unfortunately, Sony didn't announce a time frame for release of Ice Cream Sandwich or even when it might announce a time frame, saying only that those details would "be...

Sony uses Wedding Invite site for CES 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
If you’ve ever been in the position we’re in as publishers headed to the Consumer Electronics Show for our umpteenth time in a row at the start of 2012, you know there’s one whole heck of a lot of invites headed our way – thats why if a group wants to stand out, they’ve got to be unique – that’s just what Sony’s done with no less than a wedding e-vite for that very purpose. What this wedding is supposed to be is a tie between Internet and TV (by Bravia), and the whole shebang is here, photos, “about us”, and everything in between. Not that we weren’t going to go see Sony at the show, but we’re doubly excited to attend now!

Sony demos paper-powered bio-battery
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony
The only thing better than Amazon Prime? Being able to power that new camera with the cardboard box it came in. Sony might be able to make that a reality (someday) with its improved bio-battery that uses paper to make energy. The company demoed the battery at the Eco-Products 2011 exhibition in Tokyo last week, and was able to power a small fan. In the demonstration, a mash of paper or cardboard (like those old school papier-mâché projects!) was put into a water mixture, and voilà, there was power. How did this bio-dream come true? Much like how a termite eats wood, enzymes in the water mixture broke down the cellulose in the paper, and then the resulting glucose (sugar) was harvested, givin...

PlayStation Vita sells 321,400 units in opening weekend, some users see problems
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
Sony's PlayStation Vita debuted in Japan this past weekend, selling 321,400 units in the first two days of availability according to research firm Enterbrain. It puts the new handheld gaming console on par with the PlayStation Portable, which sold 166,000 units in its first day — but falls short of the 371,000 3DS portables that Nintendo sold in that device's first two days on the market.
The Vita is already experiencing growing pains, however. While we haven't seen any issues with our review unit, RocketNews24 reports that some Vitas are freezing when installing the 1.50 software update, during gameplay, or just upon power-up. Others suffer from unresponsive touchscreens, while one user ha...
