Canada: Samsung Galaxy Nexus now available for free on a three-year contract
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
If you’re in Canada and want to grab yourself the Galaxy Nexus, you may care to know that your smartphone of choice is now available for free on three-year contracts from select operators, including Rogers, Bell and Fido. At the same time, Virgin Mobile’s and TELUS’ units are available for $39.99 and $79.99, respectively.
Best Buy has all these offers which we would instantly suggest if there were no mandatory three-year customer agreement. Not sure why Canadian carriers keep insisting on such deals when other developed nations are not going beyond two-year contracts (which are also too long, but that’s another story).

Samsung Fined In Korea (Again) For Obstructing Price Fixing Investigation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
When Samsung (among others) was called out for taking part in a mobile price-fixing scheme last week I expected the company to pony up the 14.2 billion won and keep their collective heads down for a while. That would’ve been the smart move: pay up, show remorse, move on, etc.
A few Samsung execs had a different idea though. According to the Korea JoongAng Daily, they instead obstructed an official investigation by the country’s Fair Trade Commission shortly thereafter, which netted the company another 400 million won ($356,000) in fines.
The fine may not sound like much — especially in comparison to the one they were hit with last week — but it’s the largest that the Korean Fair Trade Commis...

Samsung Galaxy S3 to run dual launchers?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
Another week and another Samsung Galaxy S3 photo and spec leak, which this time suggests that Samsung's eagerly anticipated handset will allow users to flip between two versions of the Android operating system.
The image and accompanying leaked details on the Galaxy S3 appeared on the popular social news site Reddit, with the post claiming to have received the information from a Samsung employee.
The post says: "He said that it will possibly have two optional launchers, ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) with TouchWiz overlay and vanilla ICS."
"They (Samsung) aren't 100 percent sure if they will stick with TouchWiz or have the dual launcher option. If they go dual, you will have the option of picking ...

Confirmed: The A5X inside the new Apple iPad is Samsung made, 45 nm
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Apple and Samsung are fierce competitors when it comes to the smartphone and tablet space, but their relationship, like any other modern relationship, can best be described as “complicated”. Last summer The Economist published a piece that broke down how much the individual components that make up an iPhone actually cost; they also listed who made said parts. The startling conclusion that threw many people aback was that more than 25% of the bill of materials for the Jesus Phone goes to Samsung. Samsung makes the processor, the memory chips, and the RAM inside the iPhone; and starting with the new iPad, they also make the screen as well. That’s easily the most expensive component. Since Appl...

Samsung NX20 leaked photos appear online
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasSamsungNX20
A new set of leaked pictures, supposedly showing the Samsung NX20 have appeared online, ahead of what is expected to be an imminent release date.
Samsung was one of the early adopters of mirrorless technology, introducing the APS-C sized NX10 back in January 2010.
However, it has not competed well against rival brands including Panasonic, Olympus, Nikon and Sony, who all stand above it in the league charts.

Apple's second slide-to-unlock case against Samsung stayed in Germany
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Nothing like a little drama in the ongoing never-ending saga between Samsung and Apple to spice up your Friday morning, eh? As legions of consumers are cashing in a vacation day in order to pick up one of Apple's newest iPads, a court in Mannheim, Germany has stayed Apple's second slide-to-unlock case. According to FOSS Patents, the decision was made for the "duration of a parallel proceeding before the German Patent and Trademark Office that could lead to the revocation, in whole or in part, of Apple's slide-to-unlock utility model." Purportedly, the judge said that the court was not convinced of the "validity of that intellectual property right in all respects, with particular concern abou...

Sprint to launch Samsung GALAXY Nexus on April 15th?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
Because this information comes from a fairly new site, we suggest that you accept it with the proverbial grain of salt. A source for S4GRU tells the site that the Sprint Samsung GALAXY Nexus will be launched on April 15th. The source is characterized as a Sprint insider from the Product Development division who confirms the release date even if it works out to be a Sunday. Sprint has a contest featuring the device that ends on April 14th which would seem to point to a release around the 15th.
Even though Sprint hasn't flicked the on switch on its LTE network, a goal made harder by the end of the carrier's relationship with LightSquared, the Sprint version of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus will sup...

Samsung shareholders approve spin-off of LCD business
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsSamsung
It's been less than a month since Samsung confirmed that it would be spinning-off its LCD business into a separate company, and it looks like things are proceeding along speedily. The company's shareholders have now approved the spin-off, paving the way for the tentatively-titled Samsung Display Co. to come into existence on April 1st. Samsung Electronics will have a 100 percent stake in that company, and the current executive vice president of its LCD business, Park Dong-gun, will take on the position of president in the new firm. All of that, Samsung says, is being done in an effort to make the company more nimble and able to respond to its clients' needs more quickly.

Samsung, LG and others fined $40 million in Korean price-fixing scam
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungLG
Korean regulators on Thursday fined domestic mobile phone manufacturers and carriers 45.3 billion won (roughly $40.2 million) for price-fixing and consumer fraud. According to the Fair Trade Commission, the companies secretly agreed to inflate the prices of cell phones while advertising offers with considerable incentives. The companies’ actions apparently tricked consumers into thinking they were buying a new phone for a bargain. “Companies took advantage of the complicated price setting practice in the mobile telecommunications sector to trick consumers,” an FTC official said. The Korea Times reported that Samsung, LG, Pantech, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have all been find for their role ...

Netherlands denies Samsung’s request for injunction against Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
As the Samsung vs. Apple battle continues to rage around the world, Samsung has been denied its request for an injunction against Apple. Samsung had requested a ban of iPhones and iPads in the Netherlands on the basis of a 3G patent infringement. The court determined that Samsung could not pursue a case against Apple products that use Qualcomm’s baseband chips because Samsung has a licensing deal with the chipset manufacturer.
