Roku has already been turning its players into TV hubs, but it's been focused on US programming -- not so hot if you're an immigrant hoping to catch up on affairs back in the homeland. Dish is aiming to remedy that by offering its Dishworld service as an avenue for the media hub: owners can subscribe to over 50 channels without having to spring for a satellite package. The focus is heaviest on south Asia, with Bangladesh, India and Pakistan getting the most service -- including a few cricket channels for good measure. If a recent FCC pit stop is to be believed (and it should), Roku's next-gen HD box may very well be on its way. Physically, the miniature device keeps the same form factor as its siblings save for the purple splash on its base -- much like a color-flipped LT. Roku, the leading streaming platform in the US and suppliers of what we like to call smart TV adapters, has announced that it is launching in the UK and Ireland. Two models of Roku will be available.
The Roku 2 XS provides support for up to 1080p video and features a motion-controlled Bluetooth game remote for casual gaming, as well as a microSD card slot for storing games you download. It comes with a copy of Angry Birds to get you started. It features both an Ethernet port and Wi-Fi for connection to your network. It costs £99.99.

Now that Netflix has launched in UK and Ireland, Roku has announced its first set-top boxes for release across the pond. The Roku LT and Roku XS are expected to ship at the end of January through Amazon.co.uk for £49.99 and £99.99, respectively — a pre-order page is live for LT, while the XS' page is currently pointing to a third-party vendor with a slightly higher-than-suggested retail price. In addition to Netflix, the company promises more than 40 content channels including MLB.TV, Facebook, Flickr, WSJ, FoxNews.com, and Crackle (UK only). Plus Angry Birds for the premium model. Roku's lineup of inexpensive media streamers has been popular enough in the US for the company to credibly talk about putting one under every TV, and now they're going international: Roku just announced that it'll be selling boxes in the UK and and Canada early next year. Of course, a streaming box is nothing without content services, so we'll see how many of Roku's channels make the trip with it, but Roku says it'll work on region-specific channels and Netflix has been making big moves in the UK, so the core pieces are definitely in place. As for Canada, well, you're cool too.

Roku is adding a dedicated Pandora button to the remote controls for its streaming media set-top boxes, allowing for one-touch access to the internet radio service. The Roku 2 XD and Roku LT models will both get the new remote sometime this month, adding another option alongside the existing homescreen shortcut. According to Roku, Pandora remains the most popular music channel the STBs offer.

Roku lands short form Disney video streaming rights

With several different video streaming firms plying their wares on the streaming video market today they are all out to lure customers in with all the streaming content they firms can get hands on. One of the popular streaming services is Roku and the company has announced that it secured the rights to stream short form Disney videos to viewers.
That means you won’t get the full-length films to stream, but shorter cartoon length vids will be offered with popular Disney characters. The videos will include Winnie the Pooh, Lightning McQueen, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomes, and AllStar Weekend among others. Roku says that it is the first firm to offer the short form videos for streaming.
