Samsung: the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus will be 'a little' thicker

Samsung: the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus will be 'a little' thicker

Posted on Oct 19, 2011 by MG1

We got it straight from the horse's mouth here at Samsung and Google's Galaxy Nexus launch event that the future LTE edition of the Galaxy Nexus will indeed be thicker than the HSPA+ model showcased today (and above). How much thicker? "A little," according to a company representative, but he wouldn't go so far as to talk millimeters. When asked if the additional size was there to hold the LTE package or just a larger battery, he also failed to elaborate. We'd be shocked if the LTE variant doesn't pack at least a bit more juice -- we've covered the damage that LTE does to a battery in great detail here -- but frankly, we'd rather have something a wee bit thicker than a phone that dies after ...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus camera and 1080p video samples

Posted on Oct 19, 2011 by MG1

Wondering what the 5 megapixel sensor within the Galaxy Nexus is capable of? So were we. We didn't have a huge variety of subjects to photograph here in our meeting room, but we ran about and captured as many as we could just for a quick comparison. As promised, snapping multiple pictures in a row was a cinch, with the camera taking just a fraction of a second before being ready to shoot again. In fact, we couldn't even tap the screen fast enough to find its limit. We have to say, though -- the built-in "Edit" menu could stand to be stronger. The "effects" were thoroughly underwhelming, and Instagram addicts will find plenty to laugh about. The croping and twisting, however, is appreciated. ...

Google recently announced that its Google Wallet NFC mobile payment service now accepts a host of new retail locations, including American Eagle Outfitters, Foot Locker, Jamba Juice, Guess, The Container Store, Toys”R”Us and OfficeMax. Previously, the payments were only accepted in a handful of Walgreens and Subway sandwich stores in San Francisco and New York. In addition, Google says its Offers service, which provides discounts at each location, is also available in a number of the aforementioned retail outlets. Users can purchase a smoothie from Jamba Juice for $2 or take 15% off at Macy’s, for example. Unfortunately, Google Wallet is still only available to owners of Sprint’s Nexus S 4G,...

According to the company, there are now 200 million active Chrome users. Back in May of this year, the number was at 160 million. In December 2010, the company said it had about 120 million users.
Market share data from StatCounter estimates Chrome's share at about 23.6% for September. Firefox was at 26.8% and IE at 41.7%. In October, it appears that Firefox will hold its market share stable, while Chrome will be climbing to close to 25% and IE may be dropping below 40%.
There is also indication that Chrome will soon be released for Android as early as next week as part of the Ice Cream Sandwich release. Google has not released usage numbers for Chrome OS, which could also be lifting Chrome ...

Rumor: Galaxy Nexus Coming to Verizon November 10th for an Ouchie $300

Rumor: Galaxy Nexus Coming to Verizon November 10th for an Ouchie $300

Posted on Oct 18, 2011 by MG1

You ready with your grains of salt? Good, because a supposedly leaked document from Verizon has pegged the much-anticipated Galaxy Nexus to launch on November 10th. That's the good news. The bad news is that it'll run you 300 bones.
The Galaxy Nexus has been the most eagerly await phone next to the iPhone 4S. Rumored to have a ginormo 4.6 inch screen with 1280 x 720 pixels, a 1.2GHz dual-core (hopefully Exynos) processor, and of course, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, this is something we really want to get our hands on. The $300 price tag stings, but if it's as good as we hope it will be, I'm sure it'll do just fine. We've already seen some video leak (though it's likely that that's an earl...

Google to launch music store this quarter

Google to launch music store this quarter

Posted on Oct 18, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google will announce and launch its own music store this quarter, Business Insider said recently. The company revealed its Music beta service in May, which allows users to store up to 20,000 songs in the cloud, but now users will be able to purchase and download tracks, too. Google is reportedly already in negotiations with the major music labels and The New York Times recently reported that the service will launch in the “next several weeks.” Record labels, however, are worried that Google’s cloud storage option could kindle, not stifle, music piracy. “We want to make sure the locker doesn’t become a bastion of piracy,” one executive told The New York Times. If Google introduces a music sto...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus passes Wi-Fi cert in Canadian form

Samsung Galaxy Nexus passes Wi-Fi cert in Canadian form

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus (Nexus Prime) could go beyond the US quickly if a Wi-Fi Alliance certification (PDF) is any indication. The Android 4.0 flagship was cleared on Thursday as the GT-i9250M; the "M" badge is usually reserved for Canada-localized Samsung phones. The Galaxy S II in Canada, for example, is the GT-i9100M.
Not much can be gleaned from the certification by itself, although it does show 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct sharing support. The new Nexus should have a 4.65-inch, 720p screen, a dual-core processor and possibly a fast five-megapixel camera.
Google and Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Nexus on October 19 in Hong Kong. It may be a Verizon exclusive in the US, but the Wi...

Google Killing Buzz to Focus on Google+

Google Killing Buzz to Focus on Google+

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google on Friday announced that it will kill off its beleaguered Buzz social-networking product in the next few weeks in order to focus its attention on Google+.
The search giant will also shut down the Google Labs site and replace Boutiques.com and Like.com with Google Product Search later today, as promised, in addition to getting rid of several lesser-known products.
Google is ditching Buzz and its API. Existing Buzz content will still be viewable on a user's Google Profile and downloadable from Google Takeout.
"Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past. We learned a lot from products like Buzz, and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision f...

Motorola stockholders to discuss Google acquisition on November 17

Motorola has announced a special meeting for its stockholders to discuss the proposed purchase of the company by Google that was announced back in August. The meeting will be held on November 17, and the stockholders will vote on whether to adopt the proposal at that time. Google announced its intent to buy Motorola Mobility earlier this year for the sum of $12.5 billion. Motorola faced a lawsuit shortly after that by a stockholder who claimed that the purchase price was not the best that Motorola could have gotten from Google.

Google Voice pulled from App Store following iOS 5 crash

Google Voice pulled from App Store following iOS 5 crash

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

What once was there now is gone. Earlier today, Google Voice was just two clicks away in the iOS App Store. Now, all that remains is a page cache (at the source link below) and versions of the app that were already installed on iPhones and iPod touches. Vincent Paquet, Senior Product Manager for Google Voice confirmed that the app had been pulled, explaining "our last update of this week had a bug that caused the app to crash at sign in. We removed it so it did not affect additional users until the fix gets published." We've been using the most recent version -- 1.3.0.1771 -- on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 without issue, but recent reviews cite the reported crashing, so it's definitely affecti...

Google to shutter Buzz, focus on Google+

Google to shutter Buzz, focus on Google+

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google announced on Friday that it is shutting down a number of properties in the coming months, the most notable of which is likely its failed social network, Google Buzz. Best known as that annoying thing under “Inbox” in Gmail, Google Buzz was a Twitter-like service that never gained traction. Buzz encouraged users to share status updates, photos and more that could then be viewed by friends in real time, however it offered no compelling features compared to already established services such as Facebook and Twitter. Google will also shutter several additional services in the near future, including Jaiku, a social network the company acquired in 2007, and Code search, a tool that helped pr...

Have you see the view of Google Maps with the buildings that pop out at your face as you’re driving through the city with your mouse clicker? It’s time to take a look. Google this week has enabled MapsGL, an option that will allow you to see 3D buildings rendered to replicate the buildings that are actually standing on site throughout their massive mapping of the earth. Through the power of WebGL, those of you using Firefox beta, Chrome, Safari (if you enable it), and starting today Opera 12 Alpha, can all see the buildings, the lovely, lovely buildings.

Google Translate for Android adds speech-to-speech translations in 14 languages

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Google released an update today to its Google Translate app for Android that further knocks down language barriers. The Conversation Mode that was launched earlier this year allowed users to speak to the app and then have the app repeat what was said in the target language. However, this feature was only available for English and Spanish conversations. With this latest update, Google is expanding the speech-to-speech translation to 14 languages.
