Announced in April 2010 and launched in January this year, Google Cloud Print (GCP) is said to be gathering serious steam, with 6 million printers already connected to it as per Google. Now even more people are likely to jump onto the GCP bandwagon as the latest version of Google’s Chrome browser features tighter integration with the cloud printing service.
Beginning with Chrome 16, which was released on Tuesday, anyone with the browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux will be able to leverage Google Cloud Print to print any webpage using the familiar Ctrl+P command (use Ctrl+Shift+P to print using system dialogue), the company announced earlier this week. Further, Google has added the print previ...

Security Firm Claims Google Is Conspiring To Kill Off Firefox

Got your tin foil hats on? Good – you’ll need it for this. Earlier this week, Accuvant Labs released a study that named Chrome the most secure browser in all the land. Um, one problem: Google was the one that commissioned the study. But the story doesn’t end there! A couple of days ago, NSS Labs – an independent security research firm – released a report of its own, in which it dissected the flaws in Accuvant’s methodology and claimed that the Accuvant study was but a small portion of a wider plan by Google to effectively kill of Firefox. Oh snap!
“The timing of the Google/Accuvant report is interesting, given that Google’s search contract with Mozilla expired at the end of November,” the NS...

Motorola Xoom receives early Android 4.0.3 build as Google adds source code to AOSP

Motorola Xoom receives early Android 4.0.3 build as Google adds source code to AOSP

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Since Android 4.0.3 is the "base version" for Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has added the source code for it to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The build supports two devices — we've already seen the update roll out for the Nexus S, but the other is a device that was also launched in direct partnership with Google: the Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi). True to form, the enterprising hackers at XDA-Developers have already compiled it into a bootable ROM for the Motorola Xoom.
The build is certainly not for the faint of heart: the camera doesn't work and there are likely plenty of other bugs, and as an AOSP-build it also doesn't include Google Apps. All that might be the bad news, but the good news ...

Google has improved its Google+ social network, tackling circle overflow with new “graphic-equalize” controls over what shows up in your stream, tweaking notifications and photos, and improving how brands can control their business pages on the site. Up to 50 administrators can now be assigned control over a Google+ brand page, rather than just one as originally allowed, with an improved notifications system that keeps all managers up to date.

Android 4.0 ICS tablet interface discovered inside Galaxy Nexus

Android 4.0 ICS tablet interface discovered inside Galaxy Nexus

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Back a few months ago there was a discovery made by an intrepid developer inside Android’s Honeycomb OS in which changing the LCD density to a smaller value than the tablet it was running on had revealed a smartphone interface for the otherwise tablet-sized OS – one day after the USA-based Galaxy Nexus has been revealed here in the USA and our pal Michael Crider from Android Community has discovered that essentially the same thing happens in reverse with Ice Cream Sandwich. What Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is meant to do for the Google mobile OS is create one single OS that works just as well for handsets as it does for tablets, but until now we’ve got less than an adequate look at what t...

Android 4.0.3 announced, bringing 'variety of optimizations and bug fixes' to phones and tablets

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Merely a day after Verizon's version of the Galaxy Nexus was gifted with v4.0.2, Google itself is announcing Android 4.0.3, a so-called " incremental release of the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) platform." We're told that the new release includes a variety of optimizations and bug fixes for phones and tablets, as well as a small number of new APIs for developers. For those curious, the new API level is 15, and some of those new ones include social stream API in Contacts provider, Calendar provider enhancements, newfangled camera capabilities (apps can now check and manage video stabilization and use QVGA resolution profiles where needed) and accessibility refinements (improved content acc...

HTC Wildfire S gets Android 2.3.5 update along with Sense 2.1

HTC Wildfire S gets Android 2.3.5 update along with Sense 2.1

Posted on Dec 19, 2011 by MG1

Well what do you know – HTC released the Android 2.3.5 update for its low-end Wildfire S smartphone. Along with the latest version of Gingerbread, there’s also the new Sense software (version 2.1), which mimics some of the aspects of the Sense UI on the HTC Sensation. However, you shouldn’t expect all of the features since there’s not enough horse power under the Wildfire S’ hood. There is the new interactive lock screen as well as few other graphic changes and that’s about it.
The update is said to be rolling out across Europe as we speak and if you still haven’t got it, you can manually check – hit “Settings,” “About phone” and the “Software updates.” From here you’ll be able to see whethe...

Google Zeitgeist's top searches include Rebecca Black, Fukushima owner, and Steve Jobs

Google Zeitgeist's top searches include Rebecca Black, Fukushima owner, and Steve Jobs

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google has released Zeitgeist 2011, its analysis of the top search terms of the year. These are always a bit embarrassing, so it's no surprise that singer Rebecca Black, whose song "Friday" was until recently the most disliked video on YouTube, was the fastest-rising term. Websites like Chatroulette and Twitter fell off the top ten, but Apple dominated: Steve Jobs, the iPad 2, and the mythical iPhone 5 all made top spots. There was one sobering addition — 東京 電力 or TEPCO, owner of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that melted down following an earthquake and tsunami early this year, was eighth on the list. That term is also the first non-Latin one to ever make the global top ten.

Adobe Flash updated for Android 4.0

Adobe Flash updated for Android 4.0

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

That certainly didn't take too long. The same day that the Galaxy Nexus (and therefore Ice Cream Sandwich) made its official debut in the US, Adobe updted the Flash player for compatibility with the new Android OS.
There had been some slight worry that Adobe wouldn't update Flash all that quickly and would leave Galaxy Nexus owners out of the loop, but those fears have been addressed. Today, Adobe released an update bringing Flash to version 11.1.112.60. The update really doesn't do anything except add ICS support, although Adobe does list a few known issues to be aware of, including:
Seeking while video is paused will not update the frame on ICS device
StageVideo using On2 and Sorenson doe...

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

This is one of the coolest stories we've come across in a while. Sony Ericsson is really taking the update to Android 4.0 seriously by releasing alpha builds for certain phones and even asking for community help in the process.
Sony Ericsson has released alpha builds of Android 4.0 for the Xperia Ray, Xperia Arc S, and Xperia Neo V handsets. This is well ahead of the scheduled release of the updates, but SE has a really cool plan here. While these ROMs are not intended for casual users or daily use, SE is pushing for users to use the xda forums to talk about the builds and help SE to build the ROMs better, and more quickly. This is a great gesture of openness that we're hoping catches on wit...

Google pulls Android Market malware that exploits SMS hole

Google pulls Android Market malware that exploits SMS hole

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Google's reportedly pulled 22 malicious apps after two security firms tipped them off that the malware was tricking users into sending SMS messages to premium-rate phone lines. Android.RuFraud poses as popular games like Angry Birds, Assassins Creed or Tetris and can affect users across Europe and Russia. Fortunately the apps are easily spotted and deleted, but were downloaded 14,000 times before being pulled -- so if you see anyone experiencing similar issues, you can let 'em know how to solve it.

How to Benchmark Your Android Phone for Free

How to Benchmark Your Android Phone for Free

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Car nuts race their rides to see whose machine is the fastest. Fitness fanatics run marathons to test their physical limitations and endurance against that of their fellows. Geeks and gearheads? Our battles are fought and won on the basis of how capable our hardware is. While our desktops and laptops might be a thing of wonder to behold, carrying them around with us for the sake of collecting the accolades we deserve isn’t always convenient. Carrying around a smartphone or tablet, however, is. Benchmarking also provides the added benefit of telling you how well your phone manages the current version of your handset’s operating system and apps, as well as whether future OS upgrades will slow ...

Ice Cream Sandwich gets its HTML5 scorecard

Ice Cream Sandwich gets its HTML5 scorecard

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Sencha has put together an HTML 5 scorecard for Ice Cream Sandwich using the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and has found that ICS is a huge step forward for Android, but still lags behind iOS just a bit in features. In testing ICS, Sencha used a variety of tests including: Acid3, SunSpider, Modernizr, Animator and Touch Kitchen Sink.
In most of the tests, ICS did extremely well, and represents a huge step forward compared to previous versions of Android. It got a perfect score on the Acid3 test, although as sometimes happens with that test, even though it got a perfect score, the Acid3 test image didn't render exactly right. Modernizr showed that the innards of the ICS browser also look good wi...
