Google reports $10.65 billion in revenue for Q1 2012, splits stock
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google just announced its earnings for Q1 of 2012 and the company did not disappoint. It raked in $10.65 billion, a full 24 percent higher than last year for the same time period and a hefty improvement over last quarter. Of that rather sizable chunk of cash, $10.2 billion came from advertising revenues -- $7.3 billion of that placed on Google's own properties. GAAP net income for the quarter was $2.89 billion, more than twice that of Q1 2011, which brings its total war chest to $49.3 billion in cash on hand. Perhaps the biggest news for investors, though, is the 2-for-1 stock split, which is a perfect accompaniment for the skyrocketing price. It's worth noting however, that this new stock i...

FCC fines Google $25,000 for unauthorized data collection and impeding investigation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The Federal Communications Commission has fined Google $25,000 for impeding a U.S. investigation into the data collection scandal surrounding its Street View project, in which the Internet giant allegedly accessed unsecured networks and collected personal information without users’ permission. The FCC said the Mountain View-based company did not cooperate with the investigation and refused to reveal the names of its engineers associated with the project. “Google refused to identify any employees or produce any e-mails. The company could not supply compliant declarations without identifying employees it preferred not to identify,” the FCC said. “Misconduct of this nature threatens to compromi...

Google's Brin: Apple and Facebook pose huge threat to Internet freedom
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleGoogle
Google co-founder Sergey Brin said during an interview published on Sunday that Apple and Facebook pose serious threats to Internet freedom because of their closed approaches to software. While speaking with The Guardian, Brin said there are ”very powerful forces that have lined up against the open Internet on all sides and around the world. I am more worried than I have been in the past. It’s scary.” The executive pointed to the “walled-garden” philosophy that sees companies like Apple and Facebook maintain tight control over third-party software on their respective platforms as the cause for his concerns. Google Takes Its Flipboard Competitor Currents Global
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Last December, Google launched Currents, its attempt at challenging popular mobile apps like Flipboard and Zite. Since then, the company has added about 400 new publishers and over 14,000 self-published editions to its lineup . Until now, though, Currents, which runs on Android and iOS, was only available in the United States. That’s changing today, as Google is taking Currents global. Local publishers can now start adding their content to the app and U.S. publishers can now turn on a translation feature to make their texts available in any of the 44 languages that are supported by Google Translate.

Google is the most popular tech brand, according to new poll
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Apparently the recent kerfuffles over user privacy haven’t damaged Google’s brand significantly in the eyes of U.S. consumers. According to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, Google beats out Apple for the crown of “most popular tech company. 82% of those surveyed has a positive view of Google, with 53% expressing a “strongly favorable” view of the search and mobile tech giant. Just 9% had a negative view (presumably many of them tech writers…), and 10% had not formed an opinion.

Android makes up nearly 70% of mobile market in China
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
If you've been wondering where Android's huge growth has been coming from, well look no further, because we've got the answer: China. The big green machine has more than doubled its share of the smartphone market in China in less than a year, and since we recently found out that China has almost 1 billion mobile users, that means some big numbers from Android. Of course, that 1 billion number is the total number of cell phone users in the country, whereas the recent numbers for Android is specific to smartphones, so we don't know exactly how many Android devices are in the wild in China.

Google Chrome OS update hits developers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleChromium OS
You may have heard a lot about it, but when it comes to actual physical products, Google’s fully functional computer operating system hasn’t exactly made its splash yet. That doesn’t mean the search giant doesn’t still have wide-eyed passion and seismic-sized plans for Chrome OS, though. In fact, in some respects, Google is just getting started. It just rolled out its newest edition of the operating system for developers.

IMDb for Android update adds 720p trailers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
The official IMDb app for Android has been updated to support streaming high definition trailers. Users can now choose between 720p, 480p, and "standard resolution," and have the option to set independent quality rates for Wi-Fi and mobile data. There's not much else going in the update other than the new streaming options, but IMDb does say its taken care of a few bugs as well. Either way, it makes a fine alternative to iOS's iTunes Movie Trailers app for Android users. So, what will be the first trailer you check out on the new app? We know what our choice was.

Facebook, Dropbox login credentials vulnerable to theft on iOS and Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 5
Security researcher Gareth Wright "stumbled into" a way to make one iOS or Android device think it's logged into the Facebook account of another. Apparently, the method also works with Dropbox, The Next Web reports. By simply copying a "plist" from your iOS or Android device and pasting it into the same directory on another device (using a free Mac app like iExplorer), anyone can easily make Facebook and Dropbox (and presumably some other apps) think they are you. It's that easy. Facebook released a statement on the matter:

Google founder snapped wearing augmented reality glasses
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been photographed wearing the company’s much talked about Project Glass Augmented Reality specs.
Confirming they are very much the real deal, Brin posed for pictures with blogger Robert Scoble, at a charity dinner for, somewhat ironically, the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
Brin was quick to inform Scoble that the glasses were very much a prototype, though Scoble said he saw a blue light flash to the right of Brin’s eye which he deemed to be Brin reading his Google+ profile. We assume he was joking.

Google activating 850,000 Android devices every day
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
It has been a year since Larry Page took over as CEO of Google. In a letter he posted recently, Page listed off a number of figures pertaining to the performance of several Google products, including Android. Page revealed that there are now over 850,000 Android devices being activated on a daily basis, saying that the OS was "on fire." Don't confuse that with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop's famous "burning platform" letter, though.
850,000 daily activations represents an increase of 150k activations per day from the 700,000 figure that Page revealed in January of this year.
