Apple iPhone 4S benchmark results leaked
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Apple iPhone 4S benchmarks are hitting the web well ahead of the October 14 release date imposed by Apple at last week’s product unveiling. Preliminary results show that the updated phone is significantly faster than the original iPhone 4, although not quite as fast as the iPad 2.
Anandtech has gathered test results from multiple sources across the web that have early access to the phone and compiled them together in addition to results from their own database of tablets and smartphones.
The 4S was the fastest phone in SunSpider’s Javascript benchmark, narrowly dethroned by the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 which scored two points higher. Apple’s new handset did take top honors in Rightware Browser...

A third party app called iGotYa did exactly what it was designed to do, resulting in the capture and arrest of 23 year old Brian Chatoo, accused of stealing an Apple iPhone 4 out of the pocket of a woman in Queens, 31 year old Erum Malik. Earlier in the week, Malik had downloaded the iGotYa app on to her phone. The software is designed to use the front-facing camera to take a picture of anyone trying to unlock the device with a incorrect password. and then email the picture to the owner of the phone. The app is available online from Cydia and costs $5.99. It is not available through iTunes.

Later this week, iOS gamers will have a lot to take in as both the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 will launch. The iPhone 4S will have Apple’s A5 dual-core chip running its innards which promise a 7x graphical improvement over the iPhone 4 and many of the benefits of iOS 5 are things gamers will gladly embrace, such as the new notifications center, the use of iCloud for games, and some much needed improvements to Apple’s Game Center service.
So without further ado, let’s get to the reasons why if you’re an iOS gamer, you should be excited about both the iPhone 4S and iOS 5.

Apple iPhone 4S is done at Apple's highest ever manufacturing margin of 70%
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Proving once again that its incremental annual upgrade strategy still works flawlessly, Apple is said to squeeze the astonishing 71-73% manufacturing margins out of the Apple iPhone 4S.
According to a Deutsche Bank analyst the 16GB unit carries $170 Bill of Materials (BOM), whereas the 8GB iPhone 4 goes down to $140.
It's not only BOM, we have other expenses like R&D as well, but when it's all done and dusted, Apple will probably be making north of 60% on a single unit, considering its carrier subsidies per 16-gigger are about $450, the largest margin in the industry, and its own personal record.
This comes hot on the heels of the news that, thanks to its appearance on a new carrier and a ...

Apple iPhone 4S gets stacked with an iPhone 4, Samsung could sue on the antenna design
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAppleiPhone 4iPhone 4s
A Vietnamese newspaper has gotten a hold on the iPhone 4S, and has snapped a few photos of it stacked up with an iPhone 4 to illustrate the design differences. They are subtle, but changes in the outer chassis do exist, and will most likely lead to new cases needed for the iPhone 4S, since the dimensions of the new iPhone are slightly different than those of the fourth generation.
The biggest change besides the slightly taller chassis of the iPhone 4S (4.54" vs 4.5") are the notches in the steel band surrounding the iPhone 4S. Apple's engineers have redesigned the reception area after the "you're holding it wrong" drama last year, and have moved the notch from near the headphone jack on top ...

Apple iPhone 4S Safari browser benchmarked, a photo gets taken with the new 8MP camera
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
In out Apple iPhone 4 browser benchmarks we were getting around 45-49 000 scores on BrowserMark, which was only slightly below the browsers on dual-core handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S II, although loading times of pages with Safari were slower in comparison with the multicores despite lack of plugins like Adobe Flash.
Now someone with an early access to the iPhone 4S has posted BrowserMark results of 89567, which is almost double the achievements of Safari on the iPhone 4. So, yes, surfing the Internets will be much quicker on the new dual-core iPhone 4S than before. SunSpider, which measures Java performance, returned results that are 3x better than on the iPhone 4. Of course, these res...

Apple iPhone 4S now shipping in 'one to two' weeks, over 200,000 AT&T pre-orders in first 12 hours
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleAT&TiPhone 4s
If there was any question of how hot a tamale Apple's iPhone 4S would be, the answer's edging toward muy caliente. AT&T's stated that the iPhone 4S has ushered in its best iPhone launch to date, receiving over 200,000 pre-orders for the device during the first 12 hours of availability (crediting its success to having the only US version operating over 14.4Mb/s HSPA+, aka FauxG). While that's good news for Ma Bell, as of today, you'll be looking at a wait time of "one to two weeks" after placing an order for this latest iThing (Sprint and Verizon included). We've yet to hear how the latter two telecoms have fared, but we'd imagine it won't be a secret for too long -- the iPhone 4S is official...

Apple iPhone 4S jailbreak has places to go and people to see, unlocking would be tougher
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Alright, now that we got the new toy from Apple, let's see what will be the situation with jailbreaking it and installing Cydia, the biggest iOS app store after... the App Store. Jailbreaking is considered legal now, not that before the Copyright Office guidelines a good chunk of iPhone users weren't setting them free.
The good news is that it shouldn't be long before a jailbreak appears, since the Chronic Dev Team recently announced they've found no less than five software bootrom exploits for the A5 chip inside the iPhone 4S, and are saving them for the release. The iPad 2 jailbreak came comparatively late, since it was hard to get access to the bootrom, placed inside the A5 this time. Si...

iPhone 4S data speeds to be faster on AT&T
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleAT&TiPhone 4s
If you’re considering the iPhone 4S, you now have three of the four major US carriers to choose from, with the nation’s third largest being added to the mix that currently includes AT&T and Verizon. Since the iPhone 4S is now a dual-band world phone, the same model will be available to all three carriers, making the choice more a matter of network preference. However, Apple has given AT&T a bit of an advantage.
When Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S yesterday, it was disappointingly without LTE or WiMAX support. Instead, Apple increased the device data speed to support the “faux-G” 14.4Mbps data speeds of AT&T’s HSDPA network, which currently offers other “faux-G” devices such as the HTC Inspire ...

Sprint will offer unlimited data plan for the iPhone 4S
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
A Sprint spokesperson gave us a ring to let us know that the newly announced iPhone 4S will be eligible for the carrier's unlimited data plan. According to Sprint, pricing will start at $69.99 for unlimited data and 450 talk minutes, with the Simply Everything unlimited calling and data running you $99.99. At the very least, the company's confirmation that the plan is sticking around will help the third US carrier to nab the iPhone stand out among its predecessors. We'll add some PR as soon as it hits.

Lack Of NFC In iPhone 4S Won’t Impact Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
While not entirely surprising, yesterday’s announcement of the new iPhone 4S did not include a mention of NFC (near field communication). Although many hoped for the inclusion of the short-range wireless technology which serves as the backbone for current and planned mobile wallet systems, Apple still has plenty of time to integrate NFC into future handsets. It’s possible that NFC will even arrive in the upcoming iPhone 5.
But will Apple’s decision to skip NFC in the iPhone 4S have an impact on today’s market? Not likely, say analysts.
NFC forecasts, to date, have varied. ABI Research estimates there will be 35 million handsets shipped this year, and double that will ship next year. IHS iSup...

Samsung looking to ban sales of Apple iPhone 4S in Italy, France
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAppleiPhone 4s
Not a day after the new Apple iPhone 4S was announced, Samsung filed patent infringement lawsuits against Apple in Italy and France with an intent to block the sale of the new smartphone. The company also plans to file suits in other countries attempting to block sale of the iPhone 4S.
"Apple has continued to flagrantly violate our intellectual property rights and free-ride on our technology," said Samsung in a statement about the suit. "We will steadfastly protect our intellectual property."
