HP should rethink ditching the TouchPad, says Canalys

HP should rethink ditching the TouchPad, says Canalys

HP has probably had the most wanted gadget in the industry this year - the HP TouchPad. Overpriced at launch, the 9.7-inch webOS-running slate was sharply discounted to $99 just a month and a half after launch, spurring long lines of bargain hungry customers making it all look like Black Friday hit us earlier. But HP’s decision to dump the TouchPad might have come a little too early.
"The TouchPad was overpriced at launch and did not sell. This led HP to draw a premature conclusion that the product category had failed," Canalys says in its latest research report.
The research group argues that not only HP would have been better off keeping the tablet - it would have been able to capture 10%...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 available for pre-order from Best Buy

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 available for pre-order from Best Buy

Posted on Sep 16, 2011 by MG1

Though Samsung has yet to announce retail availability of its Galaxy Tab 8.9 Android Honeycomb tablet, that hasn't stopped big box retailer Best Buy from listing the tablet as being available for pre-order.
The Galaxy Tab 8.9 was originally unveiled at CTIA back in March, but it has yet to hit the market, despite its bigger brother, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, having been released earlier this summer. The 8.9 features an 8.9-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display and an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz. It is essentially the same thing as the 10.1, but with a slightly smaller screen.
The version that Best Buy is listing for pre-order is not the LTE model that was announced at the end of l...

The Archos 80 G9, the smaller of the two tablets, will come in an 8GB version with a 1GHz processor. It will cost $299, and will be available for purchase from Archos on September 20. Other retailers will be added in October.
Upgraded versions of the 80 G9, with 1.5GHz processors and storage capacities of 16GB and 250GB, will hit shelves in October. They will cost $329 and $369 respectively. The larger 101 G9 will also be available in October in 16GB and 250GB...

HP Offers Refund to European Touchpad, Pre3 Buyers

HP Offers Refund to European Touchpad, Pre3 Buyers

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

The HP Touchpad's troubled saga continues: the company's European arm is now offering partial refunds to anyone who brought the tablet at anything other than the bargain-basement fire sale price. The refund is for the difference between that clearance price and the price that the buyer originally paid, and the same courtesy is also being extended to buyers of the Pre3 smartphone, which never made it to the US.
Some retailers, like Best Buy in the US, have already been offering similar partial refunds to anyone who bought the Touchpad before HP pulled the plug, but others (including Amazon) have referred unhappy buyers to HP itself. This gesture should help to ameliorate any remaining ill wil...

Can the New Amazon Tablet Succeed?

Can the New Amazon Tablet Succeed?

It's interesting that the Kindle (as opposed to the upcoming Amazon Kindle Tablet) was written off when the Apple iPad arrived, but curiously, sales rose. While the iPad is great for thumbing through magazines, the Kindle has it beat at book reading.
The Kindle has a MEMS display, which produces an image that sticks without power and supports a platform that parallels the readability of actual books. There's no glare. The page does not refresh continually. Also, the "digital ink" display uses very little juice to operate.
Amazon learned two things when the iPad came out. First, it found out that people would still buy the Kindle in an iPad world. Second, it discovered that it could sell a lo...

Sprint iPad on the way alongside iPhone 5?

Sprint iPad on the way alongside iPhone 5?

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

We know that the iPhone 5 should be coming to Sprint in October but the third-largest mobile operator may also be getting the Apple tablet to go along with it.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has prepared a 3G iPad which will be compatible with Sprint’s network. This is different than the Verizon 3G iPad but the report doesn’t mention whether there will be WiMax 4G support or not. I don’t picture Apple being the biggest fan of WiMax but I think that having 4G in an iPad could be a very cool thing.
The AT&T version has a 3G iPad but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the next version have AT&T’s 4G. The issue is that having 4G on each network will require different radios and Apple generally doesn’t ...

BlackBerry PlayBook said to be destined for 'same graveyard as the HP TouchPad'

BlackBerry PlayBook said to be destined for 'same graveyard as the HP TouchPad'

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

As Research In Motion prepares to report its fiscal second-quarter earnings on Thursday after the market closes, the future of the company and its next-generation products again takes center stage. While estimates for RIM’s second and third quarters are expected by some analysts to beat Wall Street’s consensus, performance of the vendor’s just-released BlackBerry 7 smartphones obviously doesn’t weigh as heavily on the minds of analysts as RIM’s future products and strategy. QNX and its ability to compete with the likes of Apple and Google will be analysts’ focus for the next several quarters, and unfortunately for RIM, the only QNX device it has launched to date is the BlackBerry PlayBook. R...

Ex-Samsung Electronics manager pleads guilty in insider trading probe with Apple iPad components

Ex-Samsung Electronics manager pleads guilty in insider trading probe with Apple iPad components

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

A former employee of Samsung Electronics said he indeed supplied screen components shipping information to a hedge fund manager about the upcoming Apple iPad last year.
Samsung is making some of the screens and other gear for the first iPad, so Suk-Joo Hwang was lured by promises for flying models on a private jet during weekend trips to Iceland in exchange for insider info about Apple's upcoming disruption device. We kid, but Wall Street somehow got under the guy's skin, and after 14 years of humble work for Samsung Electronics USA, he was trapped by the necessity to install a granite countertop in his old kitchen.
The guy has been granted immunity from the New York prosecutor, in order to ...

Samsung appeals the Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban in Germany

Samsung appeals the Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban in Germany

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

The Regional Court in Duesseldorf has confirmed that Samsung filed an appeal against the injunction that prohibits its German branch from marketing and selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet that was enforced last week. The injunction, which puts a pause on sales until a verdict has been reached if Samsung is infringing on Apple patents with its tablet, was upheld last Friday, and Samsung's lawyers are obviously not wasting their time.
Samsung has ways to circumvent the ban, but they might come at a price, and it obviously prefers the legal route, at least until the current stock of tablets flies out of the shelves at major retailers. Henrik Timman, who is part of the Rospatt Osten Pross...

HTC Flyer tablet gets bootloader unlock tool

HTC Flyer tablet gets bootloader unlock tool

Filed in: TabletsHTCFlyer

HTC has released the bootloader unlock tool for its 7-inch Flyer tablet. Previously available for the Sensation and EVO 3D smartphones, the bootloader unlock tool will allow users to install custom software on their Flyer tablets. A word of caution, though, as use of the tool will void any warranties. The bootloader unlock tool can be had for both the Wi-Fi-only and 3G versions of the Flyer, though it is not yet available for the EVO View 4G variant for Sprint. Enterprising users can download the tool from HTC's developer site now.

Philly newsies to offer Archos Arnova 10 G2 tablet for $99 with subscription bundle

Philly newsies to offer Archos Arnova 10 G2 tablet for $99 with subscription bundle

Posted on Sep 14, 2011 by MG1

Taking a cue from other publications pushing tablet content, two major Philadelphia newspapers are offering discounted subscriptions bundled with a discounted device to read it on -- the Android-based Arnova 10 G2. The Philadelphia Media Network and Arnova will offer the tablet for $99 when purchased with a two-year digital subscription to The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News for $9.99 a month, or $129 for the year. That tally is substantially lower than the HK $1,680 (around $250) mark that the slate alone hit when it launched last month, but it's not apt to attract too much attention outside of Brotherly Love's favorite locale. So... which paper's lined up to play copycat? Check out th...

Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 with T-Mobile bands on board gets approved by the FCC

Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 with T-Mobile bands on board gets approved by the FCC

Posted on Sep 14, 2011 by MG1

Currently, if you want to get a Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 with connectivity features going beyond the scope of Wi-Fi, grabbing an LTE model from Verizon is your only option. However, there seems to be a chance of an alternative popping up on T-Mobile's shelves, if the device that we just came across ever sees the light of day.
A Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 model with support for T-Mobile's 4G bands has been approved by the FCC, meaning that the nation's fourth largest carrier might have yet another 4G slate joining its lineup in the near future. Listed with its SGH-T859 model name, the tablet has the exact same dimensions as the Wi-Fi-only version of the GALAXY Tab 10.1 and can run on T-Mobile's 1...

Intel to show tablets, ultrabooks with Windows 8

Posted on Sep 13, 2011 by MG1

Intel plans to show Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 on tablets based on new Atom processors, and on ultrabooks, at both the Intel Developer Forum and Microsoft's Build conference this week, according to a source familiar with Intel's plans.
Intel will show off Windows 8 ultrabooks and other devices as it drums up developer support for the OS on the x86 platform. Windows 8 will work on tablets and PCs, and Microsoft has extended support for the OS beyond x86 to include the ARM architecture, which is used in most smartphones and tablets.

Best Buy puts the Sony Tablet S on display for pre-order

Best Buy puts the Sony Tablet S on display for pre-order

Posted on Sep 13, 2011 by MG1

The story of what is currently going on with the Sony Tablet S is a bit muddled. As we reported, Home Shopping Network is offering the 16GB version of the Android tablet for $599.95. Now keep in mind that the typical HSN viewer might not be someone who is well versed in technology and wouldn't know the difference between a device with 16GB of storage, or one with 32GB of storage. HSN says that the tablets are ready to ship.
On the other hand, Sony is taking pre-orders for the same 16GB version of the tablet for $499.99. The tablet is expected to ship on the 16th of this month which means if you can wait until Friday, you can save a C-note. Otherwise, if you buy the device from HSN you will ...

TouchDroid Project Dies, But Work Continues on Touchpad Android Port

TouchDroid Project Dies, But Work Continues on Touchpad Android Port

Posted on Sep 12, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

The TouchDroid project, which was created just weeks ago in the wake of HP's Touchpad liquidation sale, has already disbanded. The project's discontinuation stems not from technical problems but because of accusations of code theft by the CyanogenMod team, which has also been working to bring Android to HP's defunct tablet.
After the TouchDroid team posted a video showing off the Touchpad running a touch-enabled install of Android 2.3, the CyanogenMod team accused TouchDroid team members of stealing code from the CyanogenMod port and passing it off as their own. In the end, the TouchDroid team gave the CyanogenMod team credit for its work, posted a dump of what they had done up to that point...
