Asus Transformer Prime to launch on Thursday?

Asus Transformer Prime to launch on Thursday?

Posted on Dec 01, 2011 by MG1

One of our loyal readers, who wishes to remain anonymous, turned us on to an interesting video on YouTube. What the video doesn't say is more telling than what it does. The subject of the clip is a review for the Asus Transformer Prime. The last speculation we reported was that the NVIDIA Tegra 3 powered tablet would launch a week from Thursday on December 8th. However, after attempting to view the review, there is some reason to believe that the tablet could be released on December 1st which is tomorrow.
In trying to view the review, the video pauses and a message appears on the screen that Asus had requested that the video be put on hold until December 1st. If the manufacturer did not want...

Apple seeks to ban Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany

Apple seeks to ban Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany

Posted on Dec 01, 2011 by MG1

Samsung’s tweaks to the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 weren’t enough to satisfy Apple’s legal team. Apple successfully banned Samsung’s German subsidiaries from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 after it accused the South Korea-based company of patent infringement. Samsung responded by releasing a modified Galaxy Tab 10.1N tablet it believed had addressed all of Apple’s concerns. Unfortunately, Apple isn’t satisfied with the changes and it wants to ban Samsung from selling the new tablet as well. A hearing for Apple’s request for an injunction is scheduled for December 22nd, Dow Jones Newswires said. The two companies have been locked in patent-related legal battles around the globe and currently have ...

PhoneArena awards 2011: Game-changing product

PhoneArena awards 2011: Game-changing product

Posted on Dec 01, 2011 by MG1

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the PhoneArena awards of 2011! Today, we are here to honor the game-changing product of the year; the product that boldly broke the well-established standards of the wireless industry and grabbed the attention of consumers and manufacturers alike.
Some might think that the device we have in mind today has the tech specs of a rocket ship and the looks of a luxury car, but they would all be wrong. For the game-changing product of 2011 brags neither with its hardware nor with its visual appeal. Instead, it stands out with its extensive set of features delivered at an almost too good to be true price.

DisplaySearch: iPad 3 in Q1 to start tablet resolution surge

DisplaySearch: iPad 3 in Q1 to start tablet resolution surge

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsAppleiPad 3

The iPad 3 display should help kick off a dramatic improvement in the quality of tablet displays early next year, DisplaySearch said. Based on its own shipment forecast data, it expected the typical pixels per inch (PPI) of a tablet to jump from 147 at the end of 2011 to 191 in early 2012. It understood that two tablet screens shipping in the fall would be instrumental to the spike, including a 1920x1200 10-inch display showing in the Iconia Tab A700 and the 9.7-inch, 2048x1536 screen that could only be destined for Apple's new tablet.
More companies are expected to come onboard slightly later and push the PPI to 203 during the spring, researchers said. By the summer, that number would grow ...

Microsoft rumored to be working on Office for iPad

Microsoft rumored to be working on Office for iPad

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

The folks over at The Daily claim to have obtained information that Microsoft is planning on releasing a version of Office for the iPad. With Office being Microsoft’s second biggest seller, second only to Windows, and the iPad accounting for over 80 percent of the tablet market, it appears that an Office for iPad app would be a powerhouse release for Microsoft.
Since Apple has already established a $10 price point for its productivity iPad apps, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, The Daily is speculating that Microsoft will release around the same $10 mark in order to be competitive.
Microsoft is also working on the next edition of Office that will be fully compatible with OS X Lion as wel...

Amazon Kindle Fire hacked to run CyanogenMod 7

Amazon Kindle Fire hacked to run CyanogenMod 7

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

Though Amazon may have buried Android under a deep layer of custom interfaces on the Kindle Fire, underneath it all, it is still Android at its base, which means that enterprising hackers are going to tinker with it. That tinkering is already bearing fruit, as everyone's favorite custom Android ROM, CyanogenMod 7, has been shown booting on the Kindle Fire.
The developers that got CyanogenMod working on the Fire have not yet released it for public consumption, as it is mostly a proof of concept at this point. Its not for the faint of heart either, as it does not have the Amazon Silk Browser or the tight integration with Amazon's book, music, and video services - arguably the most valuable par...

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, may eventually run full Android

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, may eventually run full Android

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

An exploit found in the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet a few months ago has begun to bear fruit for a trio of scrappy developers. The rooting application, which will be made publicly available within the next week, will be called Dingleberry, and lets you do a few cool things. Hulu, which had previously been blocked when visited through the BlackBerry browser, is now accessible. Another neat, though less exciting possibility is use of the PlayBook’s LED, which so far only blinks when powering up or charging when the device is turned off. Apparently there’s a blue LED in there that’s never used in any official capacity which we can see above. Root access also allows for remotely changing the back...

Ban on Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 reversed by Australian Court, Apple to appeal

Ban on Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 reversed by Australian Court, Apple to appeal

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

Last month, Apple won a preliminary injunction from an Australian court which in effect banned Samsung from selling its flagship tablet, the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1, in the country. Apple had alleged that the Korean based manufacturer infringed upon its patents and the court initially agreed. Hoping to somehow salvage the holiday season, Samsung quickly appealed the ruling with the company's lawyer Neil Young (who does not have a "Heart of Gold") saying that the tablet was dead if it could not be offered for the holiday season.
As we reported last week, the Australian appeals court seemed to agree with Samsung's position that banning the tablet from being sold in the country was too harsh of...

Looking for a way to stay up to date on your favorite retailers this holiday season without amassing a mountain of soon-to-be trash? Google has announced Catalogs, an app that keeps all of your favorite look books current and in one place. The tablet application is now available for Android slates and the iPad, giving you another option when shopping from the couch. You'll be able to curate product collages that can be shared (we'd presume via Google+) with whomever you see fit. Content is pulled from over 125 brands spanning more than 400 digital catalog issues -- so you should be able to find enough to fill out that wish list. RIM offering PlayBooks to employees for $99

RIM offering PlayBooks to employees for $99

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry PlayBook is looking increasingly like going the way of the HP TouchPad, with RIM offering the tablet to employees at a huge discount.
RIM's latest desperate attempt to shift some of the crippling inventory currently launguishing in warehouses sees the company offer PlayBooks for just $99 to all employees - thats about £62.
Through a corporate portal workers can buy up to eight PlayBooks at the discounted rate, which also sees the 32GB device on sale for $149 and the 64GB model for just $199.
The deal could be the latest step towards offering those prices to the public in a fire sale reminiscent of HP's ill-fated WebOS tablet, which saw a surge in sales when reduced to under £1...

Best Buy runs out of BlackBerry PlayBook stock, cancels orders

Best Buy runs out of BlackBerry PlayBook stock, cancels orders

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

It looks like Best Buy over-promised to customers eager to snag a BlackBerry PlayBook for $300 off. Despite having the same attractive offer as many retailers over Black Friday and the weekend, Best Buy appears to be unable to fulfill many (and some say all) orders of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Prices were as low as $200, so as you can expect there was a lot of interest in the tablet as a holiday gift. Finding the cheap 16 GB model at retail stores might be a little tricky at this point, but it looks like stock is still strong when ordering directly from RIM at ShopBlackBerry.com.

ASUS Transformer Prime said to launch on December 8th

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

Android fans could have a big day coming up next week as three sought-after devices are rumored to be launching on December 8th. According to a recent report accompanied by what was claimed to be a screenshot of an internal memo, Verizon Wireless plans to launch both the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Motorola DROID 4 next Thursday. Now, according to online retailer Newegg, ASUS plans to launch its Eee Pad Transformer Prime convertible tablet on the same day. Currently available for pre-order, the Transformer Prime is set to be the first tablet to tout a quad-core Tegra 3 processor when it launches next month. Other spec highlights include a removable QWERTY keypad, Android 3.2 Honeycomb, a 10...

Amazon Kindle Fire registers strong Black Friday sales, 8 week on top of Amazon's charts

Amazon Kindle Fire registers strong Black Friday sales, 8 week on top of Amazon's charts

Posted on Nov 29, 2011 by MG1

The Amazon Kindle Fire might not be a direct iPad competitor, but it’s shaping up to be the second most successful tablet on the market. Amazon has issued a rosy press release confirming the huge demand for the Kindle Fire, which has stayed on top of Amazon.com’s best selling devices for 8 weeks in a row.
The $199 7-inch tablet offers a heavily skinned version of Android and serves more as a gateway to Amazon’s massive ecosystem of content rather than offering the full-fledged Android experience. To confirm that, estimates have revealed that Amazon might be selling the Fire at a loss, hoping to reap the benefits of having more customers in its ecosystem. Along with the lack of Android Marke...

Asus Transformer Prime now available for pre-order at Best Buy

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

While the quad-core powered Asus Transformer Prime does not have an official launch date, the tablet has been available for pre-order at Amazon and now can be reserved from Best Buy. The 32GB tablet has a Tegra 3 processor under the hood and while recent reports speculated about it launching with Ice Cream Sandwich, it looks as though Android 3.2 will be installed on the Asus Transformer Prime out of the box. Best Buy is charging $499.99 for the tablet in both champagne and gray.
According to Amazon, the Asus Transformer Prime will be released on December 16th, and if that date holds up the 10.1 inch tablet will be available as a gift for the holidays. And what fan of technology would not lo...

Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban 'not terribly fair' to Samsung, appeals judge says

Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1 ban 'not terribly fair' to Samsung, appeals judge says

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

An appeals judge in Australia recently said that a ruling which banned Samsung’s local subsidiaries from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was unfair to Samsung. “The result looks terribly fair to Apple and not terribly fair to Samsung,” federal court justice Lindsay Foster said on Friday. Samsung’s lawyer Neil Young said the lawyer in the original case, federal court justice Annabelle Bennett, failed to take into consideration the “dire consequences” that the ban would have on Samsung during the holiday shopping season. “We contend that the primary judge made a series of fundamental errors in her disposition of the interlocutory application,” a Samsung attorney said. “They were all errors of prin...
