Samsung looks past Android to find an alternative OS

Samsung looks past Android to find an alternative OS

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

Android has been good to Samsung. Very, very good. Samsung recently reported its second consecutive quarter of record earnings, thanks in no small part to its wildly popular line of Android-powered Galaxy smartphones. The South Korea-based vendor also just took the wraps off its next-generation flagship Android smartphone, the Galaxy S III. While the device may have opened the door for rivals to make some moves if they can act quickly enough, Samsung is currently the No.1 smartphone vendor in the world by volume and the Galaxy S III should help it retain that title. As good as Android has been for Samsung, however, the vendor continues to make it clear that it does not want to put all its eg...

Samsung Galaxy Note for AT&T spotted munching on Ice Cream Sandwich at CTIA

Samsung Galaxy Note for AT&T spotted munching on Ice Cream Sandwich at CTIA

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

The Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung GALAXY Note was moved to this quarter, which almost half gone, so it shouldn't be too much of a wait for those impatient Note owners who want the latest and greatest Android 4.0 on their device.
In fact, that AT&T version of the Note has been recorded on video at CTIA running Ice Cream Sandwich with a whiff of TouchWiz applied over it. Even if you didn't see the firmware version, some other telling signs, like the presence of a quick access to Settings in the drop-down notifiction window suggest Android ICS is onboard.

Now Sprint also likes Windows Phone 8

Now Sprint also likes Windows Phone 8

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

Sprint has not been the best of Windows Phone fans, famously suggesting HTC Arrive buyers should recycle their 6 month old phones for a new iPhone. The HTC Arrive is still their only Windows Phone.
Now Sprint’s director of consumer acquisition, David Owens, has expressed more positive sentiments towards the successor of Windows Phone 7, saying he was "still bullish on Apollo" at the CTIA trade show today.
Back in March there was a rumour of a LTE Windows Phone 8 handset coming to Sprint after the fall, and I guess Sprint will be dipping their toe into the Windows Phone pond once again.

You can download the update over the air by going to Settings —> General —> Software Update or by connecting your iOS device to iTunes.

Xamarin's XobotOS opens prospect of Android port to C#, can of worms

Xamarin's XobotOS opens prospect of Android port to C#, can of worms

Posted on May 07, 2012 by MG1

Would it be ironic if Android developers did an end-run around Microsoft patents by using Microsoft's own C#? Or if Google kiboshed its Oracle brouhaha with the aid of none other than Redmond? We're asking because Xamarin, the wacky open source implementer of .NET, has ported Android to Microsoft's C# with its XobotOS project. Although just an experiment and unlikely to solve Google's issues, the team showed that running the robot on C# instead of Java gave fewer coding limitations, better battery life and direct graphics access. Additionally, Xamarin reports "massive" speed gains on its HTC Flyer and Acer Iconia when running the side-project port -- no surprise given C#'s machine heritage. ...

OS X Lion update accidentally outs user passwords in plain text, stumbles over FileVault

OS X Lion update accidentally outs user passwords in plain text, stumbles over FileVault

Posted on May 07, 2012 by MG1

Are you an avid user of OS X's FileVault encryption and running a recently updated version of Lion? It may be time to consider changing your passwords. According to security researcher David Emry, users who used FileVault prior to upgrading to 10.7.3 may be able to find their password in a system-wide debug log file, stored in plain text outside of the encrypted area. This puts the password at risk of being read by other users or enterprising cyber criminals, Emry explains, and even opens the door for new flaw-specific malware. FileVault 2, on the other hand, seems to be unaffected by the bug. The community doesn't currently have a way to fight the flaw without disabling FileVault, so users ...

New Android malware spreads via infected websites

Posted on May 04, 2012 by MG1

Mobile security firm, Lookout, warns of a new malware which may be spreading itself to unsuspecting Android handsets and tablets. Coined as "NotCompatible", the malware is being propagated via Android's web browser which is thought to be a first for the mobile OS.
Before mass panic sets in through, there are a couple of things Android users should know. First, the malware doesn't seem to do anything malicious -- not yet. Secondly, NotCompatible still requires user intervention in order to install it.

Microsoft breaks down Windows 8's Media Center upgrade path, Dolby codec support

Microsoft breaks down Windows 8's Media Center upgrade path, Dolby codec support

Posted on May 04, 2012 by MG1

Many in the Windows Media Center community were afraid that Windows 8 would mark the end of Media Center, while others thought it would be like Notepad -- present, but unchanged. In the end both were wrong as Microsoft announced Media Center would be available as an add-on to Windows 8. Until now though, we didn't know exactly how that process would work. Steven Sinofsky outlined on the Building Windows 8 blog how users will be able to use Add Features to Windows 8 in Control Panel and purchase the same great Media Center experience that was included in Windows 7 Premium and Pro. The price is still unannounced but is expect to be "in line with marginal costs" -- whatever that means. The pric...

Microsoft Detects New Malware Attacking Mac OS X

Jeong Wook Oh of Microsoft's Malware Protection Center reports that his team has stumbled across a new piece of malware targeting Apple OS X computers. It exploits a remote code execution vulnerability in the Office productivity suite which Microsoft actually patched back in June 2009 (MS09-027). Almost three years later, not all machines have the patch installed, thus leading to the spread of this new hacker tool.

First Drive-By Malware Sites Discovered for Android

First Drive-By Malware Sites Discovered for Android

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

As more and more traffic moves from the desktop to mobile devices, malware has closely followed it. Now, an Internet security firm has discovered the first websites designed specifically to infect Android devices that visit the page with malware.
Lookout Mobile Security discovered the sites, which operate as drive-by malware vectors. That is, if an Android device that isn't fully patched visits one of these sites, malware will automatically and invisibly install itself on the device.

Windows Phone Developer Summit kicks off June 20th

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Next month is going be brutal for technology reporters. Apple is holding their annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11th, Google is holding their annual I/O event on June 27th, and now Microsoft has just announced the Windows Phone Developer Summit, due to kick off on June 20th. It’ll take place in San Francisco, and seeing as how no agenda was provided, we have absolutely no clue what will be talked about. They’ll be developer oriented workshops, that’s a given, but will we be heaing about Windows Phone 8? Codenamed Apollo, the next version of Windows Phone is expected to take things to the next level. Rumor has it that it’s built on the same kernel that Windows 8 uses, so develop...

Android being translated to C#

Android being translated to C#

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

If you follow the news even a little bit, you'll know that Google has been having a bit of trouble with Oracle over the use of certain Java code in Android. So, a group of developers came up with a pretty simple solution: what if Android weren't based in Java? What if, instead, Android could be translated into C#? Turns out, that might not be such a terrible idea. At the very least, it could make Android even faster than it is now.
The team at Xamarin knows quite a bit about C# and .NET, which it has used to help create a development platform called Mono, which allows for the creation of iOS or Android apps written in C# rather than Objective C for iOS or Java for Android. The apps created ...

Gingerbread adoption still growing despite age

Gingerbread adoption still growing despite age

Posted on May 03, 2012 by MG1

Google updated its Android version tracker on Tuesday, revealing the latest version of its Android operating system is slowly gaining ground. The estimated number of devices running Ice Cream Sandwich has increased by more than two-thirds over the last month, from 2.9% of all Android devices to 4.9% as measured during the 14-day period ending on May 1st. The bulk of Android devices continue to run the year-and-a-half old Gingerbread operating system (64.4%), followed by the two-year old Froyo OS (20.9%). The adoption rate of Android 2.3 is still growing, however devices running Froyo decreased by almost 3%. As more and more manufacturers update their mobile portfolios and as the HTC One X, t...
