There's a fine debate going on as we speak about Dell's back-to-school consumer laptops, but personally, we've always had a soft spot for Dell's small business-focused Vostro line. The outfit's just announced a new addition to the lineup, the 13.3-inch V131, and while it doesn't look that different from the last-gen V130, it offers all the spec bumps you'd expect from a laptop announced in mid-2011.

Acer still shrinking PC orders, won't pick up 'til September

Acer continues to reduce its orders for traditional PC notebook parts through August as it continues to struggle in the face of the iPad effect. According to Digitimes Taiwanese supply chain sources, Acer is unlikely to boost parts orders until September. In particular, its once popular netbooks have lost any sales momentum, while it continues to realign its growth strategy around its Iconia Android-powered tablet range.

Tricky, tricky, Toshiba. There's a story going around today that Toshiba's new Qosmio F755 laptop is the world's first laptop with a glasses-free 3D screen, but that's just not true.
Back in 2003, we reviewed the Sharp Actius RD3D, the real first U.S. laptop to include a parallax barrier 3D screen. At the time, reviewer Bill Howard said "Our experience viewing still images was outstanding. You do notice an apparent loss of resolution going into 3-D mode (each eye sees 512-by-768 worth of pixels), but the foreground-to-background separation is outstanding. It was even better playing a Spiderman demo movie."

Intel Creates $300 Million Fund to Make Ultrabooks

There's a new segment of portable PCs coming soon, and they're called Ultrabooks. Intel took the wraps off of the design direction at Computex 2011 for exceptionally thin-and-light notebooks that take many design cues from Apple's MacBook Air.
Asus and Acer have already announced Ultrabook products, and there will be plenty more coming because Intel is pushing hard for the growth of this new segment that the chip giant believes will be 40 percent of the consumer laptop market segment by the end of 2012.

Thin and light notebooks inevitably draw comparisons to Apple's MacBook Air, and you can probably expect a lot more of that once Ultrabooks emerge, at least at first. Part of the reason probably has to do with there not being a ton of pancaked proportioned notebooks. Intel aims to change the mobile landscape with its Ultrabook concept, and it looks as though Acer is itching to get started.

Some Lenovo customers are concerned about ghosting on LCD screens in the ThinkPad X220 laptop, in which images temporarily remain fixed on screens, but the company tried to allay fears by saying that images dissipate in a short time and do not damage panels.
The ghosting phenomena -- commonly called image persistence -- are common to LCDs and do not cause images to burn into displays, said Ray Gorman, a Lenovo spokesman, in an email. But some customers have raised concerns, saying the image persistence was prominent, and the issue was not as seemingly normal as projected by Lenovo.
