Apple Mac sales back above 10 percent - after 20 years
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersApple
New data from Gartner and IDC show that sales of Macs in the United States have crossed the 10 percent threshold -- which hasn't happened since 1991, when Macs accounted for 11.2 percent of all U.S. PC sales. In the second quarter of 2011 (April through June), IDC reports that Macs accounted for 10.7 percent of PC sales -- up from 9 percent a year earlier -- making Apple the third-largest seller of PCs after Hewlett-Packard (26.3 percent) and Dell (22.2 percent). Gartner's figures also put the Mac market share at 10.7 percent and had Apple moving into the third-highest sales slot.

Edge HD2 Mini PC is an HTPC that hides behind your TV
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersSapphireEDGE HD2
When it comes to home theater PCs, size matters -- and it doesn't get too much smaller than Sapphire's original Edge HD mini PC, pictured above. In fact, Sapphire saw no reason to fiddle with the Edge's diminutive form factor when designing the HD2, and instead poured itself into improving the HTPC's specs. Not only is the updated mini-rig small enough to mount behind your HDTV, but it also packs a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Atom, 2GB RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. All this (and 1080p VGA / HDMI out, of course) at 30W, "20 times less power than a typical desktop PC," according to Sapphire. No word on price (or pics, for that matter), but feel free to jump past the break for an official press relea...

Mac mini goes on backorder with Amazon UK, Best Buy
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersAppleAmazonMac mini
The Mac mini is once again in short supply, observers point out. At the Best Buy US website the device is now listed as backordered, with a shipping time of one to two weeks, although pick-up should be possible at some stores. Amazon UK is also listing the computer as backordered, though with a specific resupply date of July 5th.
The shortages support the notion that updated Mac minis may be imminent. As new hardware approaches, Apple tends to slow and then cease production of the previous generation. The widespread expectation for the Mini, however, is a late July or early August launch date.
Apple could be holding off on a refresh in order to preload systems with Mac OS X Lion. In any case...

At AMD's ISC stand one could find several 2U and 4U servers built with older Opteron chips, but it was a 1U pizza box server made by Supermicro that housed two 16-core Bulldozer chips running live demonstrations of POVRay. This is the first time that AMD has publicly displayed its next generation Opteron processor, codenamed Bulldozer.

Shuttle PC Announces Space-saving 3-litre PC with High Computing Power

Shuttle Computer Handels GmbH, the European subsidiary of Shuttle Inc., one of the leading developers and manufacturers of compact PC solutions such as the world-renowned XPC Mini-PC Barebones, today announces the launch of the first model of a new product line. With a volume of approximately 3 litres, the compact XG41 fills a gap in the company's product range. It offers significantly more performance than a nettop, while taking up much less space compared to the typical Shuttle shoebox format.
In terms of computing performance the XG41 matches that of its conventional equivalents. Its CPU LGA775 socket allows the use of Intel Core 2 processors (up to 65 W TDP). In addition, the two memory ...

Acer Gives Predator Desktop a Makeover, Inside and Out
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersAcer
Acer's attention-seeking Predator desktop series has been known for its over-the-top chassis design that some find totally bad ass, and many others feel is gaudy, to put it nicely (and ugly, if we're being blunt). The new Predator G5910 series trades in the funky orange case for a matte black body that Acer says is supposed to "evoke power and performance, while the angles and grooves on the front add a high-tech futuristic mood."
