Project Black Mirror upgrades Siri from voice to mind reading

Project Black Mirror upgrades Siri from voice to mind reading

Posted on Nov 14, 2011 by MG1

Some hobbyist hackers have rigged up an iPhone 4S to collect brain wave patterns from some simple ECG pads, translate them into synthesized speech, which is in turn pumped through the 3.5 mm headphone jack, and recognized by Siri as a usable command. Besides pressing the home key to initiate Siri, all you have to do is think your command, and your iPhone 4S will hop to it. The engineers expect that they’ll even be able to eliminate the need to press the home key, making it fully automatic. So far, the guys at Project Black Mirror have been able to link 25 brain wave patterns to specific Siri commands. Of course, right now the project is a bulky Arduino test board hooked up to a Macbook, whic...

BlackBerry Bold 9900 now available in white with Vodafone UK

BlackBerry Bold 9900 now available in white with Vodafone UK

Posted on Nov 11, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry Bold line has a history of white variants, and the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 has now lived up to its pedigree, scoring one with Vodafone UK. We've previously seen information that both Telus and Rogers are going to have the white version in Canada, that it'll be up for sale in Netherlands, and earlier this year there was a leaked shot of it from Dubai — but now the white 9900 finally gone official, in the UK anyway. The variant is available immediately through Vodafone, and is free on a two-year, £39 per month contract.

Apps pre-installed on the Motorola DROID RAZR can be hidden or removed

Apps pre-installed on the Motorola DROID RAZR can be hidden or removed

Posted on Nov 11, 2011 by MG1

Verizon customers holding an upgrade have had a tough decision to make between the Motorola DROID RAZR and the Samsung GALAXY Nexus. One of the factors that Big Red customers were using to decide between the two high-end phones was the fact that the DROID RAZR came loaded with Verizon and Motorola bloatware while the GALAXY Nexus is a pure Google experience.
But what if you could hide or even remove some of the pre-installed applications? There is a way. Holding on to an application inside the app tray will bring up some options including giving you the choice to hide the icon. It won't remove the app from the phone, but at least you will be able to replace the icon with your own choice on t...

Motorola Pro+ lands on Bell, shows Canadians an Android BlackBerry

Motorola Pro+ lands on Bell, shows Canadians an Android BlackBerry

Posted on Nov 11, 2011 by MG1

The latest iteration of Motorola’s BlackBerry clone, the Pro+, has just landed in Canada by way of Bell Mobility.
Besides the familiar keyboard, the Motorola Pro+ packs 4 GB of local storage, a 1 GHz processor with 512 MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and a 3.1-inch 640 x 480 touchscreen. Connectivity includes 14.4 Mbps HSPA, which Bell would like you to think is 4G, as well as Wi-Fi b/g/n with mobile hotspot capabilities, and Bluetooth 2.1 with enhanced data rate.
As a BlackBerry guy, I can see the appeal of a phone like this. There aren’t many Android handsets out there rocking a portrait-oriented physical keyboard, and the ones that do still don’t hold a candle to RIM. Whi...

HTC Ville detailed: HTC Sense 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, thinner than iPhone

HTC Ville detailed: HTC Sense 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, thinner than iPhone

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

We just got the scoop on another brand new HTC handset, which will be part of the company’s Mobile World Congress announcements alongside the HTC Edge we detailed yesterday. The HTC Ville (codename) is set to launch in April with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and, for the first time, HTC Sense 4.0. The smartphone will feature a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Series 4 processor. In addition to those specifications, the HTC Ville will house an 8-megapixel backside-illuminated camera, just like the one on the HTC Edge, with 1080p HD video capture support. We’re told the handset won’t feature NFC due to the metal construction of the case, and ...

Huawei Vision coming to the UK in time for Christmas

Huawei Vision coming to the UK in time for Christmas

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

Huawei has come to town to announce that its flagship Gingerbread smartphone, the Huawei Vision, will be hitting the UK in time for Christmas.
Old London Town, that is - the location for the Chinese company's dedicated European design centre for its Mobile Device business, that it will open at the beginning of next year.
If you didn't know already, the Vision is an Android 2.3 device that boasts a funky new UI over the top with a nice 3D (in the old sense of the word) effect going on.
But don't go getting all excited thinking it might get an Ice Cream Sandwich update - it won't. That's according to OneMobileRing, who learnt from a product spokesperson the handset will not be making the jump ...

Africa to get 4G before UK

Africa to get 4G before UK

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

The first 4G LTE networks are live in America, and phone obsessives over on our side of the pond have been ogling them with envy while we amble along with patchy 3G. We’re next, surely? Nope: according to Ericsson, countries in southern Africa could see the first commercial 4G networks as soon as next year.
Reuters quotes network giant Ericsson’s boss for sub-Saharan Africa, Lars Linden, today as stating that he thinks 4G will go live by next year.
“You will see the first networks going in 2012 already to a certain small degree. It will surprise me if the big dragons such as MTN, Vodacom, (Bharti) Airtel and all these big brands, it will surprise me if they do not do anything,” he said.

Motorola Defy ruled not rugged enough, must change advertising

Motorola Defy ruled not rugged enough, must change advertising

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

Apparently the Motorola Defy isn't tough enough for the Advertising Standards Authority. Three users complained to the ASA about the screens on their phones breaking, and after the ASA's investigation, Motorola must change its marketing messages for the Defy, specifically the claims that the phone is "dance floor proof," "pool party proof," and "life proof." The ASA outlines Motorola's thorough testing and acknowledges that "testing was conducted in circumstances designed to be more extreme than were likely to be encountered by consumers," but Moto does admit that it "could not cater for every eventuality," so the ads have to change. Seeing as how the Defy is a year old now, this shouldn't i...

HTC Rezound starts shipping early because you can't stop the Beats

HTC Rezound starts shipping early because you can't stop the Beats

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

When HTC took the wraps off the Rezound, it tipped us off to a November 14th launch for Verizon's Beats Audio-branded device. Now, it appears that those of you who jumped on the pre-order bandwagon are getting premature access to the red-and-black-tinged goods, with some units arriving as early as today. How'd this come about? Well, it seems a few eager beavers lucked out during the purchasing process, selecting overnight delivery and receiving the phones toute de suite. We can't promise you Big Red's still honoring this ordering quirk, but don't let that stop you from trying your luck. We have a feeling Dr. Dre would approve.

AT&T remains the preferred carrier for iPhone 4S owners

AT&T remains the preferred carrier for iPhone 4S owners

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

Even though the iPhone 4 came to Verizon as an alternative carrier in February, the iPhone 4S was the first phone to launch without exclusivity to AT&T. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all carry the iPhone 4S nationwide — well, at least when it’s in stock — and even with all the complaints over the years, customers are still choosing AT&T more than any other carrier. Based on statistics from Localytics, more than half of all iPhone 4S units activated are on AT&T.
AT&T’s iPhone 4S has claimed 56 percent of market share, making it the leading carrier for Apple’s latest smartphone. Coming in far behind is Verizon with 32 percent and last but not least, Sprint with just 12 percent. The latter is fairl...

BlackBerry Bold 9790 expected to launch November 25

BlackBerry Bold 9790 expected to launch November 25

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

The official BlackBerry Indonesia site has posted a teaser banner for a new handset coming first to the region on November 25. The image file name is “hero_bellagio”, which we’ve known to be the code name for the BlackBerry Bold 9790 for months now.
From what we’ve seen of the 9790, there won’t be much separating it from the 9900, aside from a more slight form factor. There’s going to be 8 GB of local storage, OS 7, and the same 2.4-inch 640 x 480 display. The 9790 will have a little leg-up on the 9900 by including autofocus for the camera – vital if you want to take quality close-up shots. NFC will be included, but whether or not the carriers will allow it to work is another issue altogethe...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus shipping delayed by Amazon UK

Samsung Galaxy Nexus shipping delayed by Amazon UK

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

We are still waiting for proper information about the release dates, locations and carriers for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and in some bad news it seems that Amazon UK has delayed the shipping date of the phone to December 2nd.
This obviously doesn't indicate a wider delay with the Galaxy Nexus, but it certainly isn't good news. The pre-order page for the Galaxy Nexus on Amazon UK has recently changed the shipping date of the phone to December 2nd. O2 still has the release of the Galaxy Nexus listed as "Soon: November", so this may just be an issue with Amazon UK.
We'll bring you more as we get it.

LG Prada K2 P940 Android smartphone is at the FCC

LG Prada K2 P940 Android smartphone is at the FCC

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

We’re hoping LG is finally gearing toward the launch of its Android-based Prada K2 P940 smartphone, which we’ve already seen “in the wild” before. The device is now at the FCC, where the government employed engeneers are testing its radiation levels and whether or not it fits nicely with their Prada boots. Presuming it gets clearance on both fronts, the Korean company will be ready to introduce its beautful smartphone on the U.S. soil and we’re hoping that will happen sooner rather than later. After all, LG does want to have such a device on the market for the Christmas shopping season… presuming it finds a carrier partner.

Galaxy Nexus gets its page at Vodafone UK

Posted on Nov 10, 2011 by MG1

Yep, we’ve told you Vodafone will be one of the British mobile operators to offer the brand new Galaxy Nexus and voila… the first Ice Cream Sandwich device got its page at the Big Red carrier’s website. Unfortunately, it’s the standard “Coming Soon” page that doesn’t reveals any details like let’s say the price, but you can leave your email and be among the first ones to get that information once the phone becomes available.
