Nintendo “flame red” 3DS coming September 9
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Nintendo keep teasing us with the red 3DS, originally included as part of the pre-launch line-up, and then quietly shelved in favor of the black and blue versions. Now the company has announced that the “flame red” 3DS will go on sale September 9, timed alongside the release of Star Fox 64 3D.
As with the existing 3DS models – after August 12 - the red version will carry the lower $169.99 price tag. Star Fox 64 3D is one of the big-name titles Nintendo hopes will help turn around the 3DS’ fortunes; 830,000 of the handhelds have been sold in the US since its launch, a figure that Nintendo has admitted it is disappointed by. The sudden price cut, so soon after the 3DS went on sale, prompted a...

Nintendo heads for The Cloud for free 3DS Wi-Fi
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
The lure of the 3DS grows ever larger. Following the massive price-cut announced last week, Nintendo has now done a deal with public Wi-Fi specialist The Cloud to get gamers free access to the internet whilst they're out and about
And, with the BSkyB owned hotspot provider being Europe's biggest public Wi-Fi network, there's going to be plenty of opportunities for 3DS owners to get their SpotPass on.
SpotPass is the web-powered tool on 3DSs which allows the downloading of software and game data across the airwaves. The free access will also mean web browsing with the 3DS and free visits to the eShop to buy titles for the virtual consoles.
Steve Nicholson, MD of The Cloud, said: "Nintendo is ...

Nintendo 3DS could have D-pad issues
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
The Nintendo 3DS woes continue, this time with alleged button warping on the handheld's D-pad. Pictures of the console's controls with peeling paint and buttons that looks like prunes have begun to emerge across the Internet.
The problem began as an apparently isolated issue connected with the type of paint used on the 3DS. Photos of a single 3DS owner's device were posted showing warped buttons and paint. A second set of shots have now arrived that show very similar problems.
This suggests that the paint used on the 3DS could be defective. What is not clear, however, is if the fraying and warping is caused by extremely lengthy periods of playtime, something much more difficult to design a...

Nintendo CEO responds to 3DS price drop backlash
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Post-purchase price drops are one of a number of curses that plague early adopters. Generally, however, such shifts take time, so Nintendo caught us all a bit by surprised when it announced that it will be cutting the cost of the 3DS from $249 to $169 in mid-August. The gaming giant was quick to mend fences, offering 20 free virtual console games to those who got burned by the discount. Nintendo's CEO Satoru Iwata followed up the announcement with a more formal apology to consumers, noting that they may well feel "betrayed" and "punished" for their early adoption. Iwata added that early buyers are still "important" to the company, and that the decision to drop the price was due to concerns o...

Nintendo 3DS sales fall 50 percent in Japan before price cut
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
The Nintendo 3DS is having a tough run as of late. Following last week’s announcement that it would lower the price of the handheld, 3DS sales fell to 16,415 units down from 31,826 units the week before. The four days following the announcement represented the greatest decline. Even more surprising is that on August 11 when the price cut goes into effect, sales of the 3DS are expected to decline further.
In Japan the Sony PSP remains king, selling over 36 thousand consoles last week, up from 26 thousand the week before. For Nintendo, sales of its handhelds (DSi XL, DSi and DS) remained stagnant with 5,267 units, 4,625 units and 138 units respectively. Sony continued to dominate traditional c...

Nintendo 3DS titles to get in-game purchasing later this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Nintendo needs to milk more out of its revenue-generating units -- er, that's us -- in order to reassure anxious investors. Hence Satoru Iwata's mention at a financial Q&A of plans to allow in-game premium DLC on 3DS titles by the end of this year. He said he was wary that the Nintendo brand could be damaged by low-quality DLC, but was nevertheless keen to offer 3DS customers a way to purchase extra levels or features that extend the life of a game. It's about time Nintendo spruced up its online offerings, but we'd rather spend our arcade money on this.

Nintendo to make loss on each 3DS after price cut
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Nintendo's decision to slash the price of its Nintendo 3DS handheld console following disappointing sales will mean that the company will make a loss on each unit sold.
According to the Japanes arm of Bloomberg, Nintendo's radical price cut – which CVG ascertained was likely to be about a third off in the UK – means that the gaming giant is making a loss.
Microsoft and Sony both accept losses on the consoles that they sell, with game licensing meaning that they can afford to take a hit on the hardware because of the profits from the software.
Traditionally profitable
Nintendo has traditionally taken the approach that profit should be made on the hardware as well – something that served it we...

Nintendo posts first quarterly operating loss; 3DS now just $169.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Nintendo posted its first quarterly operating loss ever on Thursday in its fiscal first quarter earnings report. The Japanese gaming company recorded a net loss of 25.5 billion Yen ($328 million), which was on a par with the net loss of 25.2 billion Yen ($324 million) the firm reported during the same quarter last year. In addition, it posted a net operating loss of 37.7 billion Yen ($485 million), down from an operating profit of 23.3 billion Yen ($299 million) during the first quarter of 2010. Nintendo also slashed the price of the 3DS to $169.99, down from the portable gaming console’s original $249.99 price point. Nintendo attributed the poor quarter to a lack of Wii and DS sales, as wel...

What’s wrong with Amazon’s cosmo black Nintendo 3DS?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Yesterday Amazon temporarily suspended sales of the cosmo black Nintendo 3DS. The console was later reinstated, but not before the mainstream media ran wild with the story. Today, we lay out the facts and uncover what exactly went wrong at Amazon. Spoiler alert: there’s nothing wrong with the cosmo black Nintendo 3DS.
Even an online retail giant like Amazon.com has its good days and its bad days. Yesterday was a case of the latter. Due to an internal shipping issue, a brief hold on Nintendo 3DS orders was triggered. Until the issue could be reviewed by a pair of human eyes, sales of the cosmos black Nintendo 3DS remained suspended.
Amazon provided additional insight, stating that sales are o...

Amazon stops selling Nintendo 3DS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendoAmazon3DS
Amazon has stopped directly selling the Nintendo 3DS citing customer complaints as the cause of its decision. The portable gaming console currently has 359 reviews and an average of 4/5 stars on Amazon’s website, which suggests customers are happy with the unit itself, but the online retailer has posted a note that states:
While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described here. (Thanks for the tip!)
We’re working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
It remains unclear but Amazo...

Nintendo Video for 3DS ready for US release?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Nintendo's own 3D video portal, known as Nintendo Video, may be set to launch in the US this week, though the company has given conflicting signals. The feature appeared to arrive on the 3DS handheld via the eShop, however the listing turned out to be a "coming soon" reference that is not yet linked to an official download.
"To start watching, download Nintendo Video from the Nintendo eShop today," Nintendo's own website reads, adding to the confusion.
When it arrives the Nintendo Video utility will enable 3DS owners to download and view 3D and 2D videos selected by the company. The content will be available for free via Spotpass, with new listings to be added periodically.

3DS Only Selling At Half The Rate Of DS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
When you don't have any stellar games for a system, it's not going to do that well in the marketplace. That's the lesson Nintendo is learning with the 3DS.
After weeks of analysts talking about poor sales and an overwhelming lack of interest in the new glasses-free 3D handheld, Nintendo confessed in its own press release that the DS is still outselling the 3DS at a rate of two-to-one, but instead of treating it as a failure for the 3DS, you can probably guess how they spun it.
"The fact is that while the 3DS is a compelling system, its cost and the lack of killer games for it mean that uptake is bound to be on the slow side — compared to the DS, which has a library of megahits stretching bac...

Netflix for Nintendo 3DS now up and running
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
As promised, Nintendo on Thursday morning posted Netflix for 3DS owners. The app (not pictured here) gives the dual-screen game system access to the whole catalog as long as they have a streaming-enabled plan. Bookmarking still works and lets users resume on the 3DS or another device.
Videos on Netflix are currently in 2D. It's not clear if or when Netflix will start adding 3D.
The app itself is free to download from the Nintendo eShop. Streaming under the newly instituted rates stays at $8 for those who only need streaming but costs $16 for those who also want unlimited DVDs.

Netflix streaming comes to the Nintendo 3DS tomorrow
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendo3DS
Ever since Nintendo's GDC announcement in March we've been waiting for Netflix streaming on the 3DS, and it appears tomorrow's eShop update will do the trick. This may be too late for those that followed through on threats to cancel after the new rates were announced yesterday, but all other 3DS owners can get their Parks & Rec (in 3D?) anywhere in range of a WiFi signal. Joystiq also points out there's also two Game Boy games coming in tomorrow's update, Game & Watch Gallery and Baseball, just in case you're interested in using your portable game machine to actually play games.

Nintendo Wii U will have 3D support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendoWii U
The Nintendo Wii U has the ability to support 3D games, but Nintendo won't be focusing on this feature when it is launched in 2012.
This is according to Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo – who was speaking to MercuryNews about its 3D capabilities.
"If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on," he explained.
"When it comes to 3D, we already have the 3DS, and each owner of the Nintendo 3DS is capable of viewing 3D images."
Wii U, me, who?
Iwata notes that the reason it is not focusing on the 3D side of gaming is because consumers aren't hungry enough for the...
