HTC Dream

Ownership period: less than 1 year.
I have the HTC Dream from Rogers, which is the same thing as the T-Mobile myTouch 3G. I used to have the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1) but then got a free upgrade from Rogers because they were planning to update the Magic to 2.1 in the future but the Dream would stay at 1.5.

It has a good display. It's a capacitive touch-screen that is only a tad smaller than the iPhone's. Doesn't feel as smooth as the iPhone but still easy to use. Very responsive.

Sound quality during calls is good. Loud enough to hear and not be too staticy or anything like that. The speaker isn't as loud as I would like but it still gets the job done.

Obviously has all the Google apps and whatnot built in as it's an Android phone. Mine started with the standard 1.5. It was good enough. Faster than the Dream was. No noticable lag. Keyboard never lagged for my, unlike when I used on-screen keyboards for the Dream. I then got an update to 1.5 SenseUI from Rogers so now it's running with the Hero look. It works very well now with facebook and twitter integration. 7 homescreens and all the large 1-page widgets from HTC/Android are awsome. And even with this new update and the completely new UI, the phone still didn't lag for me. I was able to listen to music, have a full 7 screens of widgets, have IM client on in the background (eBuddy) and then play a game (Papi Jump) or surf the web and still not notice any lag.

Rogers still witholds paid apps from our market, and it's still the 1.5 market, so there's not much to say about the apps except it';s the old 1.5 interface and only 1.5 apps - not 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1 apps.

Camera takes good photos. It could use flash though. I was at a shisha bar with some friends and wanted to take some pictures but there wasn't much light and even when my friend was near a light, the photos were completely black almost. But overall quality in good conditions for a 3.2MP camera impressed me.

  • Good screen

  • For me at least
  • still being stuck on 1.5 is a pain
  • also a pain that Rogers doesn't support paid apps

ok, i've had this phone since 08/07/2009 and i've been inlove with it. then only thing that was hard for me to let go of my G1 is that i don't ahve a keyboard for my emulators. i know i can play the emulators with the volume key and the back key/ search keey but that's nothing. i made the move for the memory and at the time was under the impression that 1.6 would not come to g1. anyway, on to my review.

the display of the screen is not bad at all as long as it is not compared to the n-one, moment, droid etc.. lol. decent size screen. movies stream well on it. colors blend well with eachother and it is not grainy at all.

i like the volume on the phone and the ringtones are nice and clear, and loud. i tested the media player against the fender LE and the fender lost horribly. the call qaulity is really good too. i get stellar service in the sentral florida area.

the functionality of the phone is really easy especially since it was the same as the g1. the only thing i wish they still had was the camara button.... it comes with the stock android so only 3 screens. however you can download any home replacement app to get more screens.

1.6 os is a lot better then 1.5. especially with the organization of the market. although android market still has a ways to go with making it accesible.

the camara and the camcorder are average for todays PDA's and media phones but it gets the job done. if a flash would have been installed it would be a lot better.

overall i give this device an 8 for wht it was at the time when i first came out. now compared to the newer breed of android it is a 6.5 to me.
