Palm Pre Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

Palm's Pre is a stylish lozenge of a phone with a minimalist look. It has a single button under the screen, but there's little else to interrupt its smooth, rounded edges. Open it up, though, and there's a full QWERTY keypad with raised keys that make typing easy. There's 8GB of internal memory, but no memory card slot.

The Palm Pre's clever interface is tempered by slow loading, the initially impressive exterior design has weaknesses, and AV performance is good, but not great. It's a near miss.

In some aspects, however, the Pre is in fact like the iPhone. It also offers Google Maps, for example, and they pop up slide around about the same as on an iPhone, which is to say, a bit slowly and a bit choppily. Web browsing seemed to be about the same as well. The Pre's browser did launch a bit quicker, but the surfing experience was similar, at least in my very limited tests This was surprising, given Sprint's powerful EV-DO data network and AT&T's own-far-from-loved 3G service.

The Pre is a well-designed piece of equipment. Although we felt that the keyboard could be improved, it was useable and we thoroughly enjoyed the combination of the touch screen, the gesture area, and the keyboard. Palm has done a great job of creating a phone that is quite capable of competing with the iPhone.

This is a superlative smartphone that, a few stuttering moments aside, has stolen our hearts every bit as much as the iPhonedid when we first tried it. Not perfect, but a hell of a phone.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

We definitely liked using it, and the interface is a joy to use once you understand how it works and figure out all the tricks. The Palm Pre is a better choice for savvy computer users than the Apple iPhone or even the highly extensible T-Mobile G1. It's a new mobile computing paradigm more than a highly useful phone.

Palm’s breakthrough device is the first smart phone that truly gives the iPhone a run for its money.

phonedog‘s review Edit

For a first-generation device, the Palm Pre is a fantastic. The webOS platform is a delight to use, and beats the iPhone in overall multitasking abilities. More importantly, I see a great deal of potential in the future of webOS. The phone itself is strong in most categories, with the exception of the battery life. Fortunately for Palm, the features of webOS and the overall excitement surrounding the Pre outweigh the terrible battery life.

The Pre has many strengths. Among those is its sleek design and bold, large screen; 3.2-megapixel camera that takes impressive photos; integrated messaging system that allows a person to see emails from multiple inboxes, ability to layer items from more than one calendar; switch between messaging systems in the middle of conversation.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

When I first got the Pre I was disappointed. I expected it to be like my iPhone but better. Instead, the Pre ended up being better in some areas, worse in others, but predominantly different. The more I used it, the more I let go of my iPhone upbringing and embraced how well Palm combined the UI elegance of the iPhone with the functionality of so many smartphones before it.

WebOS looks promising, but curious design choices and the cost of ownership don't do it any favours compared to its rivals.

Expectations for the Palm Pre are almost impossibly high, but Ed Hardy says this device just about lives up to them. It is easy to use but powerful, and has the features both consumers and business people are looking for in a phone.

Palm hopes the Pre can bring it back from the brink of extinction. Based on what Phone Scoop sees, Palm's chances of salvation are pretty good. The Pre is a solid phone, even if it makes a few mistakes.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

Palm’s near death experience has had an impressive effect. The revitalised company hasn’t just updated its PDA for the twenty-first century, it has crafted a fun, practical and drop-dead gorgeous smartphone that stands close comparison with Apple’s iPhone. It could do with a speed boost, some interface tweaks and way more apps to download, but even as it stands, this is one fine touch-phone.

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

The Palm Pre is a very nice smartphone that leaves little to be desired in terms of features and its WebOS is one of the best operating systems on the market. So, if you really don't want to use iTunes and aren't tempted by a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device then the Pre sits in an attractive middle ground. However, much as when Android first launched on the T-Mobile G1, we feel the handset doesn't quite do the operating system justice; the keyboard is only okay and the build quality lags a little behind the competition.

MobileBurn‘s review Edit

There is no denying that the Palm Pre is an important device for both Palm and the industry. It is considered by many to have been Palm's hail Mary pass - its last chance at survival. It is a bit early to see if it worked or not, but initial indications suggest that it has. As for the industry, the Pre and its webOS prove that Apple is not the only company that can put out an intuitive user interface that is polished, easy to use, and all around fun. With webOS, Palm has thrown down the gauntlet, and it is time for the rest of the industry to react.

The Pre's webOS software is touch-friendly and fun, but the cramped QWERTY keyboard detracts from the phone's usability.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

Despite some missing features and performance issues that make it less than ideal for on-the-go professionals, the Palm Pre offers gadget lovers and consumers well-integrated features and unparalleled multitasking capabilities. The hardware could be better, but more importantly, Palm has developed a solid OS that not only rivals the competition but also sets a new standard in the way smartphones handle tasks and manage information.

One last effort. A slow, but firm, shove of the chips. All in. Palm's only hope to save a company once synonymous with smart handheld devices: the Pre. Their eyebrow raised, daring you to call. They flip. Full house. Respectable. Decent. Impressive even. But not the highest hand.

It's not like we didn't tell you. And hey, it's not like we're on time either. But we guess better late than sorry goes both ways. Once a popular (mostly stateside) PDA and smartphone maker, Palm were going full blast from safe to sorry. So, did they try to put the brakes? Negative. They hit the U turn.
