The Mate 9 is currently retailing for $599 through Amazon, which is an attractive price for a large-screened smartphone, as they usually come at a price premium. It’s much cheaper than the Google Pixel XL or the iPhone 7 Plus, while the LG V20 comes in at a similar price point. Considering the solid range of hardware Huawei has included in the Mate 9, it’s a great choice for those after a large handset.

It doesn't have the flame-prone Note 7's beautiful lines and curves, but if you're after a high-performance big-screened phone that won't set your pants on fire, the Mate 9 is a great option.

The Huawei Mate 9 is, without a doubt, one impressive mobile device. It shatters expectations of what Chinese-branded smartphones, which are usually affordable but also under-powered, can be capable of. It does have a few quirks, addressed in the Mate 9 Pro model, but some of those, like the display, can be easily overlooked. Huawei, however, is facing a fierce battle against the old guard. While Samsung has definitely taken a hit this year, it promises to rebound next year. Google now takes the top spot in DxOMark’s list. And the iPhone 8 might shape up to be quite an intriguing smartphone. It’s definitely a David versus Goliath, multiple Goliaths in fact, story. Hopefully for Huawei, its story will have the same happy ending.

Phone Arena‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Ultimately, you're going to choose the Mate 9 because you want a big-screen smartphone above all else, and this phone offers that without making too many other sacrifices. It's not necessarily the best phablet around, but it's certainly one of the more compelling options you'll find.
