Given the price point and intended market, the Sigma 17-70mm ƒ/2.8-4 OS performed quite well. Good performance for sharpness, excellent resistance to chromatic aberration, low corner shading - the lens has test results which commend it. Many users may be tempted in by the ''faster'' aperture performance offered by the lens - ƒ/2.8-4 versus ƒ/3.5-5.6 of most kit lenses - though at 50mm and longer, they may find that they must stop down to achieve the sharpest images.

Well where do I start? Sigma seem to have pulled out all the stops for this lens. Not only is it capable of producing images with excellent sharpness, but the zoom range is very useful, as is the close focusing ability and the optical stabilisation. The build quality is good for a £330 lens too. There are a couple of minor niggles with the lens, such as the focus ring rotating during autofocus, but to be honest these are only minor issues. In terms of performance for the price, this lens is superb!

The Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4 HSM OS DC remains a fairly obvious candidate for budget oriented consumers. It may not reach stellar performance levels but the resolution figures are generally very decent. However, you may try to avoid the f/2.8 setting at 17mm due to fairly soft corners and high vignetting. Like most standard zoom lenses it shows a pronounced degree of barrel distortion at 17mm whereas other focal lengths are less affected. Lateral CAs are comparatively well corrected. All-in-all the results are almost surprisingly similar to its predecessor.
