Samsung Galaxy R Announced - A Tegra 2 Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy R Announced - A Tegra 2 Smartphone

Posted on Aug 11, 2011 by MG3

Earlier this year while at MWC, Anand and I broke news of a Samsung Galaxy phone with Tegra 2 inside. At the time, we assumed it was a Galaxy S2 variant, the GT-I9103. At the time, the suspicion was that either Samsung was preparing a Tegra 2 variant in case Exynos yields weren't good enough, or that it was a cheaper regional variant for some markets. Since then, we've seen Galaxy S2's international launch come and go, with no Tegra 2 variant.

The Samsung Galaxy Z smartphone that was revealed for European markets earlier this month is said to be headed to the UK as the Galaxy R by the end of July. Featuring a step down in specs from its bigger brother, the Galaxy S II, the Galaxy R has a 4.2-inch, WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) display and a dual-core processor that is expected to be clocked slightly slower than the 1.2GHz unit in the Galaxy S II. The Galaxy R is slightly thicker and heavier than the Galaxy S II, and it features a 5 megapixel camera as opposed to the 8 megapixel shooter on the S II. Pricing and carrier availability for the R have yet to be announced.

Considering the Samsung Galaxy S2 has a dual 1.2GHz processor, it is definitely the more powerful handset but the Galaxy Z is still an impressive piece of kit.
The 4.2-inch display isn't SuperAMOLED but it is SC-LCD with a WXGA resolution. When it comes to memory, there's 8G...

Been lusting after the Galaxy S II, but aren't willing to break the bank? We hear you, and apparently Samsung does too. Up for pre-order today, on the Swedish arm of Three, is the Galaxy Z -- billed as a more affordable spawn from its Korean progenitor. The Gingerbread-toting handset will sport a 4.2-inch Super Clear LCD, 1GHz dual core processor (rumored to be Tegra 2), and 8GB of onboard storage, extensible with microSD.
