Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G-9600 Pro Reviews

PC World‘s review Edit

Overall, the Acer Aspire Ethos has a functional though imperfect design. The detachable trackpad doesn’t work particularly well and performance is fairly average. But the laptop looks and sounds good, and movie playback is superb. And $1499 isn’t a bad price for a system with an 18.4-inch display--especially if what it does well is a good match for your needs.

PC Pro‘s review Edit

Acer’s Aspire Ethos 8951G does most of the things you’d expect of a top-flight desktop replacement. It’s very powerful, has a large, high-resolution display, and is packed with features, from the Blu-ray player to its 1.5TB of hard disk space. The problem with this laptop is that it would have to be a whole lot better to justify the £1,420 price tag – including a better quality screen, and a touchpad that worked properly.

A stunning 18.4-inch, 1080p screen is merely the biggest of the multimedia goodies in this laptop. In addition to top-notch performance, this desktop replacement packs in some pleasant (and useful) surprises.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

It may be huge, but the Aspire Ethos houses plenty of good stuff, including a quad-core Core i7 CPU and a solid state drive, and it supports up to 16GB of RAM. It even has a nifty innovation: its touchpad is removable and doubles as a specific media remote. All up, a good option for anyone after a powerful desktop replacement.

As a home entertainment machine, the Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G does almost everything right. Attach a mouse and some decent speakers and you're set.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

The 18-inch Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G is a huge multimedia powerhouse laptop with a unique removable touch-pad remote control. It's a clever idea, but one that might be ahead of its time.

LAPTOP Magazine‘s review Edit

The Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G has some things going for it: a full HD screen, Blu-ray playback, solid sound, and a unique removable touchpad. It's a good choice for those who crave the largest screen possible. If you can live with a 17-inch screen, the similarly-priced HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition offers much stronger overall performance due to its SSD and 7,200-rpm hard drive, though it lacks Blu-ray. Gamers should probably scoop up the ASUS G73SW, which offers much stronger graphics performance but much shorter battery life. Overall, the 8951G is a solid choice for those who want the freedom to control their media from a (limited) distance.

SlashGear‘s review Edit

The Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G notebook is a worthy contender for your dollars if you’re looking to replace your desktop PC with something slightly more compact and portable than an all-in-one PC and also capable of delivering a high-end multimedia experience. The solid build, sophisticated styling, and powerful performance leave little to complain about. The detachable touchpad that does double duty as a remote control is also a nice touch, although keeping it from getting lost is a concern.

Notebookcheck‘s review Edit

Acer has revved up and slightly modified its Aspire Ethos. The 18 incher provides a good performance with the Intel Core i7 2630QM processor and the graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M. The installed 16 GB DDR3 main memory stand for themselves, but will provide an additional benefit anytime soon. The additionally installed SSD also contributes a noticeable performance gain in routine use. The other equipment is up to date. A USB 3.0 hasn't been left out and Bluetooth 3.0 +HS is also installed.
