Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 Pro Reviews

ephotozine‘s review Edit

As this is the lens that was supplied as a kit with earlier Olympus PEN digital cameras, it will be one many owners of these cameras already have. Unless you require a faster maximum aperture, or a longer zoom range, the quality produced by this lens should be more than adequate for most photographer's requirements. Unfortunately the slow autofocus speed and rotating front element design let this, otherwise fantastic kit lens down a little, but if you can cope with these quirks, then there should be no reason to upgrade in pursuit of better sharpness.

The Olympus 14-42mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 II M.Zuiko fared very well in our tests, showing that Olympus lens designers have not been idle. The complete redesign of the lens has proven very effective, though if you've been happy with your version I lens, you probably don't need to rush out and get the new version.

Although there appears to be a slight drop in resolution wide-open at 42mm the MTF curves stay above the crucial 0.25 cycles-per-pixel level.

Optically, the Olympus 14-42mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 tested quite well, showing sharp results wide open, and even better when stopped down slightly. CA is a bit higher than we'd like at wide-angle, but happily the worst of it manifests only when the lens is significantly stopped down. At 25mm, the lens offers excellent performance, tack-sharp at f/5.6. Results for Distortion and Corner shading were both excellent. As kit lenses go, the 14-42mm is quite nice, and its compact design is quite welcome when handling the E-P1.

The 14-42mm M.Zuiko has a small locking button on the zoom barrel. This allows you to turn the barrel way beyond the 14mm point, collapsing the lens to just over half its length.
