If the best-quality footage and shooting options galore are your main needs in an HD pocket camcorder, the Kodak Zi8 gets a glowing recommendation. However, we did experience some key usability issues, even if its video quality blows the competition out of the water.

Despite the number of problems cited in this review, the Zi8 isn’t a terrible pocket camcorder. It’s just that in the areas where it differentiates itself from other cameras in this class - 1080p video, external audio input, and image stabilization - it doesn’t perform well.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Kodak Zi8 is an object lesson in why an impressive spec sheet does not necessarily make a good product. The image stabilisation can smooth out small jitters from using it hand-held, but you may be disappointed. The 1080p recordings, while technically impressive, are a little dirty at 100%, and while the Zi8 claims 30fps, it often drops below this and videos are sometimes a little stuttery. You'll start to notice after a while that the internal mic isn't exactly a great performer at the natural distance from which you frame your subjects, but you can at least plug in an external one. The mic jack seems to be a little noisy, however.

The Zi8 definitely represents an improvement for Kodak, but the camcorder was a disappointment overall. Even with its larger sensor, increased pixel count, and Full HD video recording, the Zi8 managed a lackluster performance in most of our video tests - sometimes coming in with worse numbers than last year's Kodak Zx1.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Overall the Zi8 is a mixed bag. The internal mic is shockingly poor when you get outside and the controls on the device (i.e., settings and playback) very fiddly. In addition to that the lens isn’t very wide so you’ll have to stand back to get in all the action, something that if you’re in a close environment with kids isn’t all that easy.

The Kodak Zi8 is a very competitive addition to the pocket sized HD video camera market. It features decent video quality and has extras like 5-Megapixel still images, a Stereo Mic input and both A/V and HDMI outputs.

Maximum PC‘s review Edit Like Unlike

If you’ve been eying Flip Video’s popular MinoHD (reviewed March 2009) but have been put off by the simple-enough-for-simpletons approach, Kodak’s Zi-8 is the pocket cam you’ve been waiting for.
