We liked the look of this camcorder, and its multitude of sharing options. The lightweight feel and price suggest that it is for a younger market. Bad image quality in low light conditions, limited internal memory and a small screen let down the entry-level Kodak Playfull ZE1.

As it's now possible to buy this funky little camcorder online for around £105, Kodak has got a winner on its hands. The range of HD video recordings you can capture and immediately upload is great - although the menu controls could do with some improvement.

With the death of the Flip cam earlier this year, there’s a specific void that’s been needed to be filled. While the market for an ultra-compact video camera isn’tthe biggest out there (otherwise Flip would still be a thing), there is most certainly a niche audience that use and love them. The Kodak PlayFull definitely meets that audience though – it’s about the size of two and a half Kit Kat bars (or as you can see in the later pic, smaller than an iPhone 3GS with an Otter Box case) and it takes (default) 720p video at 30 frames per second (this can be upped to 1080/30p).

Steve's Digicams‘s review Edit Like Unlike

The Kodak PlayFull ZE1 is the most compact of the Kodak digital video cameras. Offering Full 1080p HD video capture and 5-Megapixel still image capture, its very handy to have around all of the time. Its image quality is in line with its $129.95 price tag.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Very few pocket camcorders have got it bang on which, in some ways, makes the Kodak Playfull’s shortcomings forgivable. The size and simplicity are right even if the £129.99 price tag is around £29.99 too dear. The key plus point, fortunately, is the footage itself. The only chink its armour is the reliably bad close focus but keep reasonable distance and the results are solid with the 60fps shooting a superb weapon to have at your command. But, if you are going to buy the Playfull - and, to be fair, there are better camcorders out there - just make sure to ignore the software it comes with. It will take over computer if you don’t.

With pocket camcorders, the point is being able to take them on the go and shoot spontaneous video on the fly. If you're looking for something that has more depth and shoots better quality video, then don't bother with the PlayFull, but you also shouldn't be looking at this type of camera in the first place. That being said, as far as pocket camcorders go, this doesn't shoot the best video or pictures, nor does it shoot the worst. You get what you pay for with the PlayFull, which is to say, just enough.

Don’t call the pocket video camera dead just yet. Despite an abundance of devices that will get similar results and companies with similar offerings, Kodak’s Playfull rises above the pack with smart design, outstanding video quality and a price that’s downright reasonable. The Ze1’s digital image stabilization, in particular, makes it one of the most downright practical pocket camcorders we’ve tested. While smartphone users might find the video on their devices “close enough,” users who need a dedicated video device without the expense of a full-size camcorder will still find plenty of value in Kodak’s Playfull Ze1.
