There's no doubt the 8GB iPod Touch is a great games machines, and at a new low price of £149, with a wealth of decent yet cheap games just a download away, it's a great choice for gamers who don't feel the need to brag of their allegiance to a gaming brand. It's especially good value when you consider you get a class-leading media player and excellent browser thrown in too, and a stack of other useful tools.

Functionally, the new iPod touch models are identical to the second-generation models we reviewed last year, especially when updated to version 3.1 of the iPhone OS. What we said then still goes: the iPod touch is a terrific media player and portable computing device that doesn’t require any of the commitments or ongoing costs of the iPhone. The new high-end models add the blazing speed of the iPhone 3GS, making them even better for games. If you’re in the market for a game machine, video player, portable internet device, and music player all in one - and if you don’t want to pay O2 every month - you can’t do better than the iPod touch.

The iPod touch is a terrific media player and portable computing device that doesn’t require any of the commitments or ongoing costs of the iPhone. If you’re in the market for a game machine, video player, portable Internet device, and music player all in one - and if you don’t want to pay AT&T every month - you can’t do better than the iPod touch.

The iPod touch is more than just a music player. It is truly a PC in your pocket. Use it to listen to music, watch movies, play games, check email, or surf the web. Except for making phone calls, it can do just about everything a smart phone can do, but with no monthly charges.

Even though the latest revision of the iPod Touch didn't get a video camera or an FM radio (like the iPod Nano did), this is still the top portable media player around.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

All Apple could really have done to make the 3rd generation iPod touch significantly better was to add a camera or something else impossible like the ability to make your dinner. There's a temptation to slate the device for not being different enough but, at the end of the day, it's a decision that needs to stand on its own. The question is should you buy it and the answer is whole-heatedly - yes.

As a mere media player, you'd be hard pushed to justify the high cost of an iPod touch. But as a mobile computing device that will run 3rd party apps, play games, browse the web and play your media, it's simply unrivalled.
