A reasonably attractive and slightly retro micro system is letdown by distinctly average sound quality from digital sources - including from its iPhone dock - and optional speakers that fail to impress. If you can't bear to rip-and-sell your CD collection, you've made the right choice; this Onkyo does well with CD if paired with some decent speakers, but overall this system has one too many rough edges to be declared fit for the digital age of audio.

While not a super stylish all-in-one iPod dock, a bombastic high-end HiFi, or a mega multi-channel surround system, the Onkyo CS-545UK is a great all-rounder. With DAB, FM, USB playback, an iPod dock, and CD player onboard, it will cover most music listening needs, while the line input and separate stereo speaker arrangement means you can use it as an easy upgrade for your TV's audio, making for a complete living room audio solution. However, a slightly cumbersome interface keeps it from getting a higher score.

Playing everything from classical chamber music on CD to rock and pop from an iPod, this is an enjoyable, involving listen, if lacking the slam and weight available eleswhere. Despite that dock, others make more of the Apple players. We keep coming back to that word ‘honest', because it’s the best way to describe this system. It keeps things simple, and is all the better for it.

However, it’s undermined by its remote control, potential issues with older iPods and digital radio sensitivity. Ignoring networking to rely on CD, MP3 and iPod makes it all seem a bit 2004. If your taste for the high-tech has moved on from when Dido, Maroon 5 and Norah Jones dominated the charts, then you should look elsewhere.
