ASUS Crosshair IV Formula Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

There is no doubt that the ASUS Crosshair IV Formula is an high-end AM3-motherboard. ASUS have been mostly concentrating on the Intel-side with their RoG-boards so it is nice to see them release such an nice motherboard for the AMD-plattform. The motherboard is full of nice features and we are sure we haven't even scraped the surface on all the things we can do with it. It is cool to see that ASUS has managed to make it easy both for the novice overclocker to get a good overclock with the push of a button (as well as the oppoirtunity to try to unlock unused cores) while still offering a ton of overclocking options for the expert overclockers.

Functionally, it's mostly good. ASUS uses AMD's latest chipset to good advantage, and offers its own custom silicon to add advanced power management and overclocking features, and third party chips for features like USB 3.0 and high-end sound. It's great to see a processor chipset that finally supports SATA 6Gbps natively, even if devices that can use it are thin on the ground just now...but they won't be in another 6-12 months. Onboard buttons for power, reset, and BIOS clearing are expected on high-end motherboards these days.

The C4F fails to impress, as a comparably priced LGA1366 motherboard (and Core i7 CPU) will yield more performance from its overclock. Even Asus’ M4A89GTD Pro USB 3 offers much the same performance and overclockability, but for only £120. The C4F is therefore a pretty, but pointless, motherboard.

All in all, if you really want the most for your Thuban, then right now the Crosshair IV Formula is your best bet. The competition is going to have to work pretty hard to claw it back.

ASUS has taken on the 890FX chipset and gone to town on it with the Crosshair IV Formula board that currently etails for around £165. Packed to the rafters with features and bolstered by a good layout, it's backed up by an excellent BIOS and solid performance in all of our tests.

We are sure it will not come as any surprise, but the AMD system fits into the high-end gaming platform quite well. When you combine the $300 Phenom II X6 with the ASUS Crosshair IV Formula you end up with a very capable gaming system at a rather low cost. This is not to say that it is the cheapest platform out, just that you are going to get more bang for your gaming buck with this board and CPU. The addition of features like Turbo Key II, X-Fi audio, Gaming First LAN connection and CrossfireX support just add to the value here. With a $230 price tag at NewEgg.com, it is hard to go wrong on this one.

xbitlabs‘s review Edit

ASUS Crosshair IV Formula is somewhat cheaper than Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7, but the difference is small. Both mainboards are actually quite expensive and intended for a small category of computer enthusiasts. As we said in the beginning of this review, the key benefit of AMD processors is that they are rather cheap whereas an expensive mainboard would negate this advantage.

motherboards‘s review Edit

The ASUS Crosshair IV Formula is an interesting first look at an AMD 890FX+SB850 motherboard combination. In terms of features all of the bullet points are here including USB 3.0, SATA 3.0, the various overclocking utilities and tools ASUS brings to the table and a robust bundle that complements the features of the board. In terms of performance the Crosshair IV Formula is faster than the 890GX boards I’ve seen. In terms of overclocking the board was able to overclock the Phenom II X4 810 to 955 level speeds easily and a little beyond that in fact. Looking at the board as a whole I have to give it an Editor’s Choice for doing the job well.

Unlike the previous Crosshair III, which really was not that much of an upgrade over their standard 790FX board, the Crosshair IV takes design to a whole new level. The added features, greater usability, and outstanding overclocking features and performance make this one of the premier AMD boards out there. It is very much on the same level as the MSI 890FXA-G70, but the two have enough differences between them so as to offer something unique to the user.

Overall, we were impressed by the number of innovative and unique ideas ASUS packed into the Crosshair IV Formula. It is important to note however that even with all these “bells and whistles,” ASUS never lost sight of what this product was meant to be: a true enthusiast motherboard. Through the overclocking endeavours and our testing, the Crosshair IV Formula won our hearts.

Asus charges a steep price for the Crosshair IV Formula but you get masses of hardware features in return. Despite the cost we feel this AMD motherboard offers decent value for money and there is no denying that it looks absolutely gorgeous.

ASUS really hit a home run with the Crosshair IV Formula. I feel like I've only scratched the surface talking about the features this board has. For a gamer or overclocker that wants the most control and flexibility over their system, this is the board for you. Currently costing about $220 USD, it is definitely on the high-end for AMD motherboard prices, but for the features it offers and the chipset, that cost is well justified. With SATA 6Gb/s support and a pair of USB 3.0 ports, this board is ready for the next generation of devices that we are starting to see trickle out on the market.
