Overall, the Sony VPL-VW90ES won the day. Not by much, but in ways the critical viewer will appreciate. A little added detail here, a little extra snap there, a little better shadow detail, black level, and/or dimensionality—it all added up, even if each of these differences were in themselves subtle. The VPL-VW90ES is an outstanding home theater projector. It’s the best Sony has yet built and the best I’ve yet reviewed.

The Sony VW90ES is a solid home theater projector that we have thoroughly enjoyed viewing in 2D. If you are looking for a projector primarily for 2D viewing, and you'd like to have 3D capability for an occasional diversion, the VW90ES may fit your needs perfectly.

Now the conclusions I have come to here are based on testing and experiences watching a wide variety of material, and let’s remember that both the Sony and JVC are first generation 3D machines so we need to be balanced and fair to each. I would therefore say that if it is 3D you want and you are going to spend this much, you really would be silly not to fully demo both at some length and if possible in the same room and see what you think. Remember that there is also a lack of 3D material so the largest point of reference for you should be 2D performance and both excel in that department.

Overall, the VPL-VW90ES should be considered a marvellous projector. It's beautifully built and delivers both corking 2D and genuinely involving three-dimensional imagery. In fact, so much so that, having lived with it for a while, I find it difficult to imagine ever being satisfied with regular 3D TV again.
