AMD Athlon X2 3800+ Pro Reviews

www.pcper.com‘s review Edit

The Athlon X2 3800+ processor in its stock form is in general a good performing processor. It is obviously slower than the other X2 processors, but you have to expect that when you are saving as much money as you do with this model. In multi-tasking environments, the 3800+ did better than the top single core Athlon 64 processor, the 4000+, but in the single threaded applications and tests the 400 MHz deficit that the 3800+ has haunted it. In gaming, which is still mainly a single threaded venture, that will mean even more.

Athlon 64 X2 3800+ appeared a faster processor than its competitor from Intel, the Pentium D 830. So, it looks like this new AMD solution has pretty promising future ahead. Especially, if we take into account the compatibility of dual-core AMD processors with the existing infrastructure, their low heat dissipation, Cool’n’Quiet technology support and the ability to switch to 64-bit operating systems and corresponding applications.

We couldn't help but be pleased by the AMD Athlon X2 3800+. With this processor, AMD has expanded their already impressive line of Athlon 64 X2 processors into a price segment that's much more accessible to the average consumer. In lots of 1000, the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ will be priced at $354 at launch, which makes it about $180 cheaper than the Athlon 64 X2 4200, which was the least expensive Athlon 64 X2 processor up until now. That's enough money for a nice motherboard and a good amount of RAM.

To get more out of such a heavy graphics card setup, the FX-60 is what you’re going to want but it is not the be all and end all of performance as our benchmarks results we’re not exactly mind blowing when compared to the cheaper X2 3800+. Sure, we understand that overclocking can come into the picture and the FX-60 can commonly hit 3GHz on air and hit more with water and phase change but for two processors at stock, the X2 3800+ really holds it ground for the price.

If you’ve been tempted by the prospect of dual-core but have been put off by the price the X2 3800+ is the CPU that should make you reconsider. It’s still about £85 more than Intel’s entry level chip but the extra performance is definitely there...
