Apple MacBook Pro unibody 17-inch Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

It’s highly desirable, but ultra-expensive; unless you need its power and big, high resolution screen, the 15in version is better.

PC World‘s review Edit

The new MacBook Pros offer a mix of improvements, familiarity and compromise. The CPU performance and battery life are much improved, and the graphics performance of the discrete Radeon HD 6750M in the 15- and 17-inch 2.2GHz Core i7 models was much faster than any MacBook Pro we’ve tested. There’s also the high data throughput of the new Thunderbolt port. The screen, weight, keyboard, speakers, and number of ports remain the same. As for compromises, there’s the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor, which turned in results that are either slower or similar to the integrated graphics used in last year’s MacBook Pros.

Notebookcheck‘s review Edit

The MacBook Pro 17“ is without a doubt a very impressive laptop. The excellent combination of powerful performance, light weight case and long battery life is unmatched. It's clearly developed for Mac OS X and only when using this operating system can you reap all the benefits the MacBook Pro 17 has in store. Switchable graphics cards, a longer battery life and the entire array of hardware features is only accessible under Mac OS X. In Windows 7, most things work alright but not as well as we'd hoped.

If you’re looking for a notebook with all the power and creature comforts of a desktop, it’s hard to find a homier setup than Apple’s 17-inch MacBook Pro.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The MacBook Pro range takes a great leap forward with the 2011 refresh, and this 17-inch model is no exception. The popular unibody aluminium form factor is retained, but across-the-board component upgrades (SuperDrive excepted) gives it a huge performance improvement over its predecessor.

Powerful, long-lasting and with a wonderful 1,920 x 1,200 screen, but the price remains unpalatable

reghardware‘s review Edit

A price tag of £1949 is enough to make even the most diehard Mac fan think twice. You could certainly get a similarly specified PC laptop for less – although features such as the Firewire port, twin graphics cards and the long-lasting battery do make direct comparisons difficult. If you just want a powerful Mac laptop then the 13in and 15in models undoubtedly offer better value for money. But then the 17in MacBook Pro is a niche product aimed at a relatively small number of Apple’s creative users who specifically need that big screen display.

Engadget‘s review Edit

Ultimately, the decision about whether to buy the bigger MacBook Pro is probably already made - if you're a power user who needs the real estate, there's little to deter you from making this purchase. Apple has cleaned up the design in all the right ways, improved the display and guts considerably, and proved that it can milk a substantial amount of time from a non-removable battery. The cost may still be a major barrier here for most, but something tells us if you really need a computer of this size, you'll find a way to pay for it.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

This is a tremendous piece of kit. Of course it's not cheap as Apple stuff rarely is, but your money buys you handsome, super-efficient and enjoyable computing. It's a real pleasure to type on the keyboard, the screen looks magnificent and it's fast, fast, fast. What more could you want?

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Doubts about the redesigned keyboard, the touchpad, and the non-removable battery can be put to rest, because the Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Unibody) is as powerful as it is gorgeous.

Notebookcheck‘s review Edit

The 17" MacBook Pro is faster and also a bit more economic, due to the new Core i processors and the GeForce GT 330M. You gain a bit of battery life on average with the now automatic switching between integrated and dedicated graphic card. So much to the improvements in comparison to the 2009 model.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The new 17-inch MacBook Pro is expensive, but as it's only £10 more than the previous model, it's still good value for money. Welcome new processor and graphics technologies make this release a very significant upgrade.

SlashGear‘s review Edit

For day to day use, even though the 17-inch MacBook Pro may be the lightest and thinnest laptop in its segment, it’s still tough to sport around tradeshows and between coffee shops. It’s definitely a desktop replacement, more suited to occasional travel to visit clients, or make short trips. Those who travel frequently would be better served by 15-inch model, unless they really do need to perform heavy-duty HD video editing on the move.
