The Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm f/2 ZF is a stellar performer on FX, however combined with the high resolution DX sensor of the Nikon D7000 it loses some of its sex appeal. The lens is still sharp straight from f/2 in the image center and it reaches excellent quality levels around f/5.6 here. The borders and corners however show quite a bit less sharpness at large apertures. It's worth to notice though that, typical for most Zeiss lenses, the Distagon delivers a very high level of contrast, even wide open. Just like the rest of its family the Zeiss lens is built to the highest standards.

When Rob Galbraith asked Kornelius Mueller of Zeiss about the anticipated performance of a Zeiss 28mm ƒ/2, Mueller speculated that corner softness and CA would be better than present models. Based on test results, Zeiss hasn't produced a significant improvement; corner softness, corner shading and CA are particularly bad, though you'll really only see these issues on a full-frame camera body. These issues aside, as well as the fact that you're essentially working with 60's era technology, the Zeiss 28mm ƒ/2 is a pleasant departure from plastic polycarbonate construction.

We weren't really impressed by the T* 25mm f/2.8 but the Zeiss ZF (ZE) Distagon T* 28mm f/2 plays in a very different (better) quality league - it's even slightly superior to the T* 35mm f/2 which is certainly no slouch. The lens is sharp straight from f/2 and it reaches excellent quality levels around f/5.6. There's some field curvature at f/2 and f/2.8 which may be a problem in certain scenes (out-of-focus corners) though.
