And it's bad enough to ruin a performance that's otherwise very decent. Bass weight and depth are impressive, and yet the sub still manages to integrate seamlessly with the smaller satellites, leading to a tonally unified presentation. There's good detail, timing and drive all-round, too, and the soundstage is surprisingly three-dimensional. The problem is that it's really hard to concentrate on the positives when your ears are ringing with the negatives.

Altec Lansing's Expressionist Ultra speakers have numerous issues. Considering the price, this is simply unacceptable - we'd expect a nearly flawless level of audio quality and these speakers just don't have it. We recommend Creative's similarly priced Gigaworks T3 2.1 speakers, which sound clear, rich and detailed.

The Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra MX6021 has good sound quality for its asking price. Even though it may not be as good as the older MX5021 and the Creative Gigaworks T3 in terms of resolution and details, the overall sound is quite warm and pleasant. It’s also a speaker system that has enough power to fill a large size room.

Love it or hate it design excepted, there's no complaining about the performance of the Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speakers. Just be aware you could get more for the same money, albeit with a more conventional design.
