The O-Play AIr Media Player is a simple, portable HTPC media Player that just about anyone can use. It did not take my parents long to figure out how to hook this unit up to their HDTV in their bedroom, and get some of their personal TV shows to play on this media player.

An impressive and very capable media client, although you do pay a little more for it than some of the competition. Still, a welcome step in the right direction for Asus and another competitor in an increasingly interesting and broad home media streamer market.

The Asus O!Play is a competitive product but it lacks the same wide ranging compatability of the both AC Ryan and Western Digital media players. The O!Play is clearly underpowered versus these products too as the OS feels lethargic. The addition of integrated wireless is a niche edge versus the other media player products, however we'd strongly encourage using a wired connection where possible: nothing is more frustrating that a wireless signal falling over mid-movie because someone in the next room decides to use the microwave or other devices that flood the 2.4GHz spectrum.

So, all told, the HDP-R3 is a capable if somewhat unsophisticated multimedia player. It certainly plays back all the files we'd hope for and with Wi-Fi, eSATA, USB, and memory card slots, it's plenty versatile enough in its connectivity. However, its menus are rather crude, its network support rather basic, and price a little high.
