Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM Pro Reviews

shutterbug‘s review Edit

I really like extreme lenses. Extremely wide, extremely fast, and extremely long lenses will all allow you to create unique images that stand out from the crowd. When I heard about the Sigma 8-16mm lens I wanted to get my hands on one and start shooting, so I asked my editor if I could borrow one from Sigma for testing. He wanted to know what I was going to do with it, so naturally I told him: take portraits. You might, as he did, find this a little odd—taking portraits with a wide-angle lens, and a very wide lens at that. After all, don’t photographers usually use long lenses for portraits?

ephotozine‘s review Edit

Having such a wide field of view, coupled with the close minimum focus distance of only 24cm, makes this lens a lot of fun to use. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, especially if you like to use filters on your wide lenses, and a lens as wide as this can be quite a challenge to use well. Saying that, if you find yourself hitting the stop at the wide end of the zoom on your current APS-C compatible ultra-wide zoom, then this lens is certainly worth a look. Overall it is well built, well priced and performs pretty well. Just like its full-frame 12-24mm cousin, this lens is one of a kind and should find a home in plenty of photographer's kit bags.

The-Digital-Picture‘s review Edit

The Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Lens is priced near the top of its class - but still less (at review time) than the other ultra-wide angle APS-C lens I love, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens. And none of these lenses are extremely high-priced. I think the Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Lens is a great addition to the kit - it might be my favorite Sigma lens reviewed to date.

Optimized to work where you'll probably be using it, there's not much more to say here that the review doesn't cover. If you need ultra, ultra-wide, you won't go wrong with the Sigma 8-16mm, and at present, there's not a whole lot else to choose from.

photozone‘s review Edit

The build quality of the Sigma lens is very good although some may not like the vulnerable "bulb"-like front element which prohibits the use of filters. The AF is both fast and nearly silent. The pricing of the Sigma is very attractive relative to its performance figures as well as the extreme nature of the lens. Therefore ... highly recommended (if you can find a good sample)!
