Overall this is a very nice lens that offers a bright viewfinder and excellent image quality, with a clever added extra in the form of its dual-format lens hood.

The Sigma AF 85mm f/1.4 EX HSM DG delivers a convincing performance on DX DSLRs. The lens is impressively sharp in the image center - even at f/1.4 - but it's comparatively softer towards the borders/corners here. However, the Sigma is nothing short of excellent in the range between f/2.8 and f/8. Lateral CAs are minimal and not field-relevant. Same goes for image distortions. The vignetting is only a slight problem at f/1.4 and not an issue anymore from f/2 onwards. The quality of the bokeh is generally excellent except in very tricky situations. The amount of bokeh fringing is on the high side,so you may spot some colored out-of-focus halos in critical situations.

The build quality of the lens is up to pro standards. The metal lens body is rubber-coated thus providing a good grip. The tightly assembled focus ring turns smoothly but it's a bit tricky to find the exact focus due to the very short focus path. On the other hand the same short focus is also responsible for fast auto-focusing so there's a certain trade-off here. We had no significant issues with focus accuracy on the tested sample. The Sigma AF 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM is quite expensive in absolute terms. However, even so it costs much less than the corresponding Canon lens (which is slightly faster though) and as such a highly interesting alternative.

Sigma have created a real gem here. This 85mm f/1.4 is a relatively affordable wide aperture telephoto lens, that is capable of producing superb results. The lens handles well, feels very well put together and costs hundreds of pounds less than manufacturer's own equivalent lenses. In fact the difference in price could pay for a three night break for two to Reykjavik flying from London with an excursion to see the northern lights. Just imagine if manufacturers threw that in for free with their wide aperture 85mm lenses!

Sigma has produced an excellent lens here: as sharp as any of its contemporaries, even wide open at ƒ/1.4. As well, the lens offers remarkable tolerance to chromatic aberration, marred only by the presence of longitudinal chromatic aberration that seems to be common with fast glass. Distortion and corner shading are also excellent. With the Sigma 85mm ƒ/1.4 producing results on par with its competitors, it's easy to recommend, especially given the cost savings that will result. However, its build quality isn't as strong as some, so how you use a lens in this category, and what environments you'll take it into, should be a factor in your purchasing decision.
