Our phones can do all kinds of things these days. Hell, millions of people — people from all different OS persuasions — are walking around talking to their phone. But even some of the most basic features — like, oh I don’t know… connecting to the Internet — could stand a few upgrades.

Nokia Siemens drops WiMax business, NewNet picks it up

Nokia Siemens Networks is selling its WiMax business to NewNet Communication Technologies, in a further sign that the long-term future is not looking too bright for WiMax in Europe and the States. NewNet didn't disclose details of the deal, but expects to close it out by the end of the year and take on around 300 employees. The company said it was interested in providing WiMax infrastructure on a global basis, but Nokia Siemens clearly didn't consider the technology a priority in its restructuring efforts — especially with an LTE Lumia 800 likely making its way to the US next year.

Nokia Siemens makes multi-carrier HSPA+ hurtle at 336Mbps

It's easy to shrug off technical achievements like this while real-world data speeds still lag so far behind. Nevertheless, the adrenalin junkies at Nokia Siemens Services insist their latest HSPA+ platform will be commercially available to carriers by the end of next year and, to prove it actually works, they've been demoing at PT Expo Comm in Beijing. The technology uses the latest 3GPP standardization to hog eight 42Mbps frequency channels at the same time, delivering a peak throughput of 336Mbps. Sure, it doesn't come close to the 1Gbps speeds we've seen from Ericsson with LTE-Advanced, but if it gets here first we'll have it.

Nokia Siemens Networks lays off 1,500 employees

Nokia Siemens Networks announced on Friday that it will begin to layoff 1,500 of its employees. The affected staff are part of its WiMAX and GSM divisions, and a spokesperson told Reuters that many of the employees were originally brought on as part of NSN’s infrastructure purchase from Motorola. In March, Nokia Siemens Networks tried to renegotiate the $1.2 billion deal with Motorola to leave the GSM division out of the purchase. Nokia Siemens has had trouble trying to record a profit and its two parent companies, Nokia and Siemens, recently ditched an effort to sell the joint venture.
