As a messaging phone it's not bad at all, and that QWERTY keyboard is one of the better, as well as one of the most discreet, we've seen. The social networking side of it has been overplayed by LG though, with only Livesquare and Facebook ticking the social boxes.

We were disappointed by the GW520 because we were expecting more: more freedom and more sophistication. The keyboard is the stand-out feature here, but the phone doesn't elevate itself much further than being a QWERTY messenger phone. It doesn’t deliver the new wave of connected social networking functions that you might be looking for.

The LG GW520 accomplishes what it sets out to; it's a low cost 3G handset with a touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard. However, the lack of Wi-Fi and headphone socket, plus the sluggishness of the OS and touchscreen all combine to leave us rather nonplussed.

QWERTY is how the Cookie crumbles and LG are quite keen to build on a winning concept. And they sure didn’t work themselves to the bone. When you’ve got a Best Handset Award nominee (LG KS360) and a midrange bestseller (LG KP500), all you need to do is add two and two together. Simple math for a simple gadget: the LG GW520 is a basic touchscreen with a distinct Cookie feel, full QWERTY keyboard and social networking on its mind. Sounds right for keeping the younger crowd interested.
